Marie Canavaggia is one of the few prominent translators of major works of American and English literature in the 20th century. Her role and influence in France and in French-speaking countries gave French readers the opportunity to discover key texts of English-language literatures. Our study of this important translator lies within the framework of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory and, secondarily, is informed by Antoine Berman's thoughts on literary translation. To develop an understanding of Marie Canavaggia's habitus—a concept it was first necessary to clarify—this study examines her biography (factual biographical information in particular) and presents a contrastive analysis of her translation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. It concludes by highlighting the elements that make it possible to better define Marie Canavaggia's influence on French literature and literary translation.

Taking as a point of departure the 1970s concept of the ‘dispositif', this article seeks to redefine it in the context of experimental cinematic practices which reject the usual tools of filmmaking, or, more precisely, replace them by ‘retrograde' technical means (such as handmade techniques, camera-less films, etc.). Instead of adhering to the classical notion of dispositif, which privileges the screening situation, the author rather suggest that we envisage a dispositif of production, involving the spatial relationship between the body of the artist, the ‘pro-filmic' event and his/her material at the very moment of production, and that informs the practices of cinematic retrograde technicity.

AbstractThis article examines the kind of relations, which exist between Islam understood as a universalising tradition and the social space over which the French Republic asserts its sovereignty. As such, it seeks to reformulate the debate about the relation between Islam and France in a way which eschews the dichotomy between national and transnational orientations. The case of Sofiane Meziani, a writer and activist from a major French Islamic federation which has in the past decade made important attempts to position itself more firmly inside France is at the centre of the analysis. Looking at Sofiane points both to enabling and limiting political effects produced through this discursive and practical engagement of Islam with the French context, more particularly with the banlieue, how they shape the ways in which he can relate to the wider umma and conceive of his French identity and how it interacts with the narrativisation of his biography.

AbstractBased on a definition that emphasizes the political dimension of liberalism, this paper demonstrates that in a general sense, Lionel Groulx's thought goes against the main postulates of this type of liberalism. The organicist concept of the nation, in which the nation is understood as a “collective individual”, with structured thought, brings Groulx to treat the individual as subordinate to the societal group. From this outlook, Groulx defends tradition and promotes a conception of education that aims to foster the development of the national feeling of belonging. Finally, his conception of the state is also anti-liberal, particularly because it rejects the distinction between the political and religious spheres.

SummaryThe founding fathers of sociology did not exclude international relations from their scientific concerns. This was especially the case with Mauss in his two manuscripts devoted to the nation and to internationalism. Durkheim's nephew sets out the essentials : necessity of empiricism, analysis of interdependencies, formulation of a sociological law as to the widening of the sense of identity and belonging. This budding positivism encounters limits, however, since it lies beyond the bounds of pure sociology, and is tinged by wilsonian ideology. This reflection has produced no heirs. Reference to Mauss in the field of international relations has suffered so prejudicial an eclipse that sociology is today reinvestigating this phenomenon.

Teachers in professional and technical training usually live a hard period of professional transition during their beginning of teaching. We have tried to show how the educational intervention from beginning teachers of the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick results from a work of dialectization of a set of contexts: educational, professionals and personals. We adopted a mixed methodology using quantitative inquiry and qualitative interviews across the five campuses of the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick. Our results show the teacher as a subject in transition, trying to reach a state of balance between the subject in formation and the many contexts through which he evolves. His professional transition is articulated through back and forth movements between skill development and identity construction, surrounding the moment of educative intervention. We thus propose a model of this articulation that could be used to analyze educational intervention in its situational perspective.

AbstractA large part of the research being done today in urban sociolinguistics concern language practices in the city or the discursive construction of urban spaces. This paper concerns the importance of using sociolinguistic tools to bring about a better understanding of cities as a specific form of social, economic and political organization. Throughout history, cities have played an essential role in the structuring of economic and political processes. Today, cities contribute to the new globalized economy, in which communication is central as a process and as a product. With examples taken from my recent research, I will examine how sociolinguistics can contribute to the social theorization of the city.

The discourse on information technologies and high tech contributes to a definition of “highly qualified skilled labour” that excludes many aspects and sets of skills, including many professions that have highly qualified workers. For example, the definition does not incorporate the different structures and dynamics of the working world, deals with problems concerning high-skill jobs at too abs- tract a level, and disregards the social and cultural processes that contribute to the definition of this term. Ethnographic data drawn from a field research assignment allow to outline the parameters of a new definition of highly skilled labour that is more aligned with the realities of the working world.

AbstractStarting from the hypothesis that the sociology of networks provides a more appropriate theoretical framework than that of the literary field for insight into concrete relations between authors, we explore a few concepts arising out of the analysis of networks that provide considerable heuristic potential, including those of social capital, centrality and structural autonomy. Thus, the case of the relations between André Laurendeau and La Relève shows that the former played a central role in the magazine's network, although without ever having been considered as a full participant. The identification of this external centrality in return reveals a characteristic of Laurendeau's socialization work ; he continually built up ties between groups, thus giving himself unsurpassed autonomy in the French-Canadian intellectual circles of the period.

SummaryThe role of metacognitive regulations and conceptualizations of teacher activities is studied through the ‘didactique professionnelle' conceptual and methodological frameworks. Based on the concept of process knowledge, the study aims to make explicit the teachers' conceptualization development and factors which could spur it. An empirical enquiry based on interviews with two primary-level teachers shows that metacognitive regulations are different according to the length of their experience and result from interactions amongst actors. Further research needs to examine the role of continuing professional development programs which favilitate metacognitive regulations.
