This paper presents a few personal fieldwork experiences by placing them in a theoretical and conceptual framework that questions the transformations in anthropology. The first section discusses the future of anthropology and the relevance of fieldwork in a discipline that is based more and more on non-traditional studies. The second section presents a few fieldwork experiences in Aboriginal and Métis environments, highlighting the silences of ethnography and the failures of the dialogic relationship that have transformed my roles, my status and my identity. The final section discusses the importance of the concept of ontology in intercultural encounters. The common thread of this article is the topic of discipline according to its various meanings: a branch of knowledge, moral guidance, a rule of conduct and obedience of authority, discipline in our culture, in our education system, among our peers and among our hosts, and the discipline that we sometimes unwittingly impose on them.
