    More information

To a large extent, Anthropology emerged out of the institutional cadre of the museum. The discipline's main task was conceived at the time to be the study of material productions of mankind. Two recent publications –  Le goût des Autres, by Benoît de L'Estoile (2007), and Les Musées d'ethnologie, by Camille Mazé, Frédéric Poulard and Christelle Ventura (2013) – help us explore some of the key moments in the long relationship between museums and anthropology. In doing so, they offer an understanding as to how these two scientific institutions were separated from each other in the 20th Century.
