AbstractAnthropology and Legal ModernityOf which nature is the contribution of anthropology to the knowledge of the law ? Through some of the main avenues traced by the discipline inside this inconvenient subject, altogether system of analysis and government principle, this paper advocates the adoption of a critical vantage point, in order to question usefully the existing porousness between anthropological accounts of legality and legal uses of ethnological information. It is though proposed to consider the " legal field " as a cultural event, historically stamped by and relative to those societies which have enforced its genesis. A conceptual criticism of the legal category thus is likely to be a preliminary condition to allow anthropology recorded facts to play a full part in a process of knowledge free from the practical requirements of an instituted legal thought.
