The Bourgault brothers, Médard (1897-1967), André (1898-1958) and Jean-Julien (1910-1996), known as the Trois Bérets (Three Berets), created a unique and authentic aesthetic movement. They trained hundreds of apprentices in direct-cut wood carving. Having examined the way their workshops were organized, we realize that they have been able to manage their enterprise with little external help, other than the encouragement of clients, often members of the elite. This article is based on a qualitative study of about forty female members of ten cooperatives in Morocco. The author takes a sociological perspective in analyzing how the spirit of solidarity within female cooperatives has declined and shows how the tensions between cooperative spirit and utilitarianism can influence power-sharing. Market pressures lead cooperatives to select leaders who have the cultural, relational, and economic capital that facilitates skill development. The investment these leaders make in the cooperative, as well as their efforts to manage it, tend to legitimize the ways they reinforce their power in the cooperative and serve their own interests rather than those of the collective.
