Issues around defining respectful relationships, and within those relationships, reconciling laws and values concerning use and control of intangible Indigenous heritage, arise in numerous museum contexts including : repatriation of material culture and associated information ; co-management of information or cultural expressions that were (and are or have been) considered sensitive or sacred by an Aboriginal community ; data and products of research derived from Aboriginal peoples or conducted within their territories ; and digital images and multi-media processes designed to enhance exhibits or access to information and participation of Aboriginal peoples in interpretation and control of collections and/or a broader public through use of contemporary technologies (e.g. « virtual museums »). However, the particular nature of western intellectual property norms (largely dictated by international obligations) and the intangible/tangible divide in western property complicate the matter. This article introduces the current legal and policy environment for addressing intangible heritage in museum exhibits and collections and how intellectual property law, in particular trade mark and copyright law, offer opportunities and challenges for policy implementation respectful of Indigenous laws and relationships.

AbstractInitiated by Prahalad (2004), “Bottom of Pyramid (BOP) Strategies” need probably, one of the highest degrees of involvement if we consider the large range of corporate social responsibility and responsiveness practices in the last years (Martinet, Payaud, 2008a, 2008b, 2009). Such very complex projects require radical innovations and very deep attention and care to cope with territories and local communities specificities. The aim of this article is to formulate a conceptual framework and a set of interrelated propositions for the strategic management of “BOP” ambitious projects. Under these guidelines, it seems possible to achieve both the goals of the firm and the human communities development on the long run.

AbstractThe objective of this research is to analyze the innovation strategy of sustainable family firms. An analysis of verbatim of managers in sustainable family firms showed that theyare constantly looking at a trade-off between stability and renewal. It highlights that the traditions act as safeguard against risky innovations. Afterward, a fine analysis ofstrategic choices in innovation made by a family firm was undertaken: it led to the specification of the concept of prudential innovation. This concept is then characterized throughseven features resulting from the commonly accepted characteristics of sustainable family firms.

The Roma are the sole people in Europe (still) having a living customary law system. In this article, we intend to explore and to analyse the hypostases of the interaction between the customary law of the Roma in Romania and the Romanian law system. To do so, we will first briefly present the theoretical framework guiding our analytical demarche, namely normative pluralism. Then, we will present the main differences between the two legal orders in relation with the two modes of social and political organization. Finally, we will sketch and explore the three hypostases of the interaction between the Roma customary law and the Romanian state law — the official non-coplanarity, the marginal intersection and the exceptional subordination.

This article presents the results of a study aimed at understanding the meaning of the practice of begging by mothers of twins in an urban context. It is based on individual interviews with 30 mothers of twins who are beggars in the city of Ouagadougou. The results reveal that the presentation of twins is a cultural fact for some sociocultural groups who regard twins as exceptional children. The begging of the mothers of twins as observed therefore responds to cultural codes, but urbanization imposes a mutation for the satisfaction of existential needs. This new form of begging reflects one of the alternative strategies implemented by these women to survive and support their families. By providing for their families, they feel useful and identify themselves as hard-working and resilient mothers.

New alternative initiatives are emerging in the food sector, with an increase of short chains and direct selling initiatives. Producers choose to work together to create collective farmer shops (CFSs) in order to sell their products locally. Faced with the changing context and the limitations of traditional forms of collective action (e.g. cooperatives), it can be difficult for producers to make an informed choice of distribution channel. This research aims to investigate this new type of collective action and to understand (a) the motives for participating to a CFS; (b) what are the benefits for the producers and (c) what difficulties they encounter. The in-depth qualitative study of 57 semi-structured interviews with producers engaged in the creation of CFSs provides answers to these three questions. At a theoretical level, this research allows to discuss how CFSs represent a renewal of collective action in agriculture. At a managerial level, it proposes a reflexive framework for producers who are already engaged in CFSs or that could join them.

The preface of the collective work titled Le paysage sonore dans la littérature d’Ancien régime, ou du son comme topos de scènes narratives reflects on the integration of multiple sounds and noises in the idiom of writers, while asking if sound would only be a supplement of a narrative scene, if it would only have a pragmatic and ornamental function, or if it could only be understood as vehicle of an argument, possibly as a fully fledged motive of the story narrated. This preface leads to the demonstration from, among other illustrations, articles of volume that it presents at the same time. The ample and varied corpus of texts studied shows that the recurrence of narrative configurations with sound confronts the ear of the reader with true “stereotypes of sound”. According to the definition of the notion of topos, the representation of sound, articulated in narrative, rhetoric and poetic, likely becomes customary of the discourse.
