Hildegard of Bingen laid the foundations for a theology of Creation, and she has had an influence on the way the “green sisters” religious communities view the world, their commitment and relationship to the planet. The aim of this paper is to outline the evolution of ecospiritual theory, as thought by Hildegard of Bingen and the parallels between this thinking and the “green sisters” movement. To achieve this, we will briefly present the writings of this medieval mystic on the theology of Creation, centered on the notion of “viriditas”. After outlining these conceptual foundations, we'll take a moment to circumscribe the evolution of ecospirituality as it applies to the current contemporary world of the “green sisters”. Finally, I will use examples of ecological initiatives developed by these nuns to illustrate how ecospirituality is becoming a driving force for them.
