21.More information
One of the common themes of the medieval hagiographic discourse is the ‘odour of sanctity'. Although its numerous occurrences are seemingly so stereotyped, historians should not refrain from studying such discourse. Interestingly, Richer of Senones (13th c.) reports a case of fabricated ‘heavenly fragrances'. Richer's report was written in a context of ongoing controversies between traditional and new religious orders. Therefore, by studiyng this text much can be learned about the significance and the importance of the sweet smell of the saints—or of so-called saints.
