SUMMARYThe new direction in Canadian immigration is to increase the intake of independent skilled and educated immigrants. It needs to be argued that at least one opportunity for an increase in fertility is foregone by doing so. Namely, the "thin" birth cohorts of recent decades will be "fattened" by immigration so that the incentives for having children on the strength of perceived opportunities for the children may disappear. Immigrants who may have a fair fertility as well as an optimism as to their own and their children's future are likely to remain ineligible for admission to Canada.

As a condition of funding from the Canadian Tri-Agencies, researchers and institutions are expected to adhere to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS) and research projects must obtain approval from a Research Ethics Board (REB). Yet there are a limited number of frameworks and standards to guide the conduct and decisions of REBs in Canada and these are most often voluntary. Delays and increased costs resulting from the lack of a common or coordinated approach to REB review for multi-jurisdictional clinical trials is a long-standing issue in the Canadian research environment. Formal reviews and recommendations as early as 2006 call for accreditation or qualification for REBs, use of common forms and templates, and federal leadership to harmonize processes.

AbstractThis article reviews the different approaches to empirical analysis of social structures and social mobility utilised in Canada and Quebec between 1960 and 2000. Studies came from two different theoretical traditions : analysis of social status and analysis of social class. Canadian sociology has made a number of specific contributions, including the development of new indicators, analysis of the links between characteristics of individuals and the larger society, the concept of collective mobility of a minority, the thesis of the vertical mosaic. Of particular importance are studies of gender relations and of language and ethnic groups. At the millennium, Canadian Sociology was notable for studies of social polarisation, which was a new dimension of the field, as well as of generational effects.
