In Seuls, Wajdi Mouawad experiments with a new kind of transposition of scenic writing, which he calls “polyphonic writing.” This text is the product of a polymorphic theatrical practice that engages a dialogue between various arts and/or medias on the space of the page. This article examines the multiple facets of this scriptural practice in transcultural and post-orientalist contexts, and the way in which Mouawad challenges the Artaudian and Lepagian models he recycles.

This article proposes to examine how political and identity-related forms of dissent are brought about by the emergence of Pidgin English in a country with 270 local languages. While ignored and opposed by different colonial and post-colonial administrations, Pidgin has rediscovered its status and value at the beginning of the 1990s, and has since been used by various political activist groups to draw attention to the difficulties facing Cameroonian communities. Full-fledged use of the language continues to be the target of official discrimination today, however its linguistic, economic, and sociopolitical importance is becoming more and more apparent. It has become the expression of an identity of dissent consisting mainly of Anglophones, a group that Cameroonian politicians must consider in order to better govern the territory and its regions.

Beginning in the sixties, actresses, writers, playwrights, and feminist collectives began to denounce their alienation and exploitation with the goal of changing the image of women in Québec theatre. In this article, I propose to analyse how these artists placed the female body center stage in order to generate a discourse of the body. I will explore the scenic representation of the body as well as the expression of female sexuality. Numerous other issues related to the theatricalization of the body will be examined, including the ideal of beauty, anorexia and obesity, pregnancy and maternity, lesbian and heterosexual eroticism, rape, and menopause. Produced and performed by women, the plays of women's theatre were written to allow female spectators to see themselves reflected in the dramatic spectacle. To create more believable female characters, it was necessary to reject the conventions of theatrical realism and imagine other strategies of representation. It was also imperative to transgress taboos associated with the female body and to invent a new dramatic discourse that allowed women to speak honestly about their corporeality.

SummaryResearch on ageing made a big leap forward when genes regulating lifespan were discovered about a decade ago. First isolated by screening the genome of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, most of these genes belong to an essential signalling pathway that is highly conserved during animal evolution. Orthologous genes in vertebrate species are the families of genes coding for insulin, insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and related proteins. Intensively studied and well-known for their pivotal roles in proliferation, differentiation, survival and metabolism of most cells, we now discover their multiples functions with respect to the control of longevity and their ability to modulate the cell's responses to oxidative stress, a major cause of cellular and organismal ageing. The activity of IGF signalling in mammals depends on a complex interplay of endocrine signals that together constitute the somatotropic axis. Accordingly, several components of this hormone axis, like growth hormone or growth hormone releasing hormone receptors, regulate efficiently animal longevity, which has been elegantly demonstrated by studies performed in genetically modified mouse models. From this and other work, it becomes increasingly clear that the control of ageing is a question of hormonal regulations. We here present several of these models and discuss the respective contributions of insulin and IGF signalling to the regulation of lifespan. We review data on the Klotho gene that acts on lifespan via surprising and not yet fully understood molecular mechanisms, connecting this new, hormone-like substance to IGF and insulin signalling. We further report recent evidence showing that human lifespan might be controlled in similar ways. Finally, we shed some light on clinical GH treatment in humans, from an endocrinologist's point of view.

Art as a form of psychosocial intervention opens-up, for individuals and groups, the possibility to connect ‟differentlyˮ. The purpose of this article is to present artistic psychosocial intervention as a key to promote social justice for marginalized, precarious or oppressed groups and populations. In order to do this, we first present a theoretical overview and lay the groundwork for artistic psychosocial intervention in Quebec. Then, we present three aims associated with this kind of intervention: to promote ‟speaking outˮ, to foster the reflexive action, and to encourage an awareness of the collective dimensions of individual experiences. In analyzing these different forms of intervention, the authors wish to underscore the many contributions of this type of practice and to highlight its innovative nature.

The right to participation of children is guaranteed and respected in various national and international agreements and documents. It means recognizing that children and adolescents need to be heard, that they have a say, even in public life. Spaces for opinion and participation have thus been set up for children between 4 and 10 years old, within traditional communities of the State of Pernambuco. The practice of listening to children brings professional and personal teachings to adults, and calls for an attitude of simplicity, humility and empathy.

Antoinette Bourgeois (1902-1991), daughter of the Franco-American photographer Ulric Bourgeois (1874-1963) of Manchester, New Hampshire, the last survivor of her family, recalls her memories in 1978. She speaks about her father, known for his photographs of rural Québec and of Manchester. Thanks to him, she met Charlie Lambert, known as the hermit of Mosquito Pond, situated near Manchester, as well as the writer-priest Henri d'Arles, a client of her father's. When her younger sister, Irène Bourgeois, fell victim to polio, she sought the aid of Brother André for a cure. Eventually, Antoinette entered the religious life as a Sister of Joan of Arc in Sillery, Québec, taking the name of Sister Céline. Consequently, she became acquainted with members of the Franco-American clergy in Rhode Island, partisans of one side or the other in the Sentinellist Movement. She also met Marie-Rose Ferron, known as Little Rose, the stigmatist of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Finally, after twenty years of religious life, Antoinette returned to her family to care for her parents until their deaths.

AbstractThis paper is based on a corpus of about two hundred humorous advertisements published in various magazines. Its aim is to study the techniques of creation and (re)creation used in the source and target texts to create humorous effects. The analysis is based on rhetoric and interpretative semantics and it will show not only that wordplay can be translated, but that the translations are often excellent.
