A previously unpublished transcript of three round table discussions held at Darmstadt in July of 1963, whose participants included Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez and Henri Pousseur. Each composer describes the subject of his course. In the debate amongst the round table participants and members of the audience that follows, these three composers raise fundamental questions about artistic craft, technique, gesture, language and syntax, form and aesthetic. Beyond the provisional observations put forward by these composers, this transcript sheds light on the practices surrounding aesthetic and technical debate at Darmstadt near the end of the so-called "heroic" period, with its ideological sparring, rivalries, and highly particular manner of setting forth problems associated with contemporary musical composition.
