ABSTRACTThe most striking form of industrialization within Third World in the 70's, the "peripheral fordism", went into crisis in the 80's. Beyond inner factors, monetarist and recessive policies led in major industrial countries did play a determining role in this crisis, which in turn could have triggered a world financial crisis. In front of this risk, monetarism had to retreat in USA after the Summer 1982, but injuries to world economy remain to be repaired.

ABSTRACTThe case of China is in many ways exemplary, due to both its extremely long history and the fact that the Chinese approach influenced other countries over the course of the centuries, and can thus be viewed as a model. The first "censuses" were intended as an administrative tool, to manage lists of those subject to the corvée. As administrative regulations evolved, these lists were made obsolete and replaced, with the change of dynasty in 1644, by fiscal records. From 1740 to 1780, in order to link economic knowledge — especially grain prices — to the demographic situation, the central government urged local authorities to produce nominative records. Genealogies, rich in information, were another source of knowledge. With certain alterations, the Chinese model spread into the surrounding region, including Japan, Vietnam and Korea. Each of these societies, influenced by its history, showed various similarities and differences with regard to this model.

No more than any other geographical region has East Asia ever really been a priority in the Canadian foreign policy. The rapid economic growth of this sub-continent has stirred Canadian interest in East Asia. This interest, expressed mainly in terms of the economy - commerce and investments - meets with numerous barriers, some specific to the region, others related to the constraints resulting from the international economic competition. In a y et more obvious way, the diplomacy of the government in Ottawa meets with internal obstacles particular to the Canadian society which, by tradition and inclination, usually has a tendency to turn more towards the Atlantic ocean. The objective of this study is therefore to identify those constraints while at the same time underlining the new efforts deployed by the Federal government to build up an increased interest in that region. This paper tries also to pinpoint the way in which the Asian policy is incapable of elaborating corrective measures to the problems still present to-day, but which have long been well indentified.

AbstractIn conference settings that have Korean and French as official languages, more and more speakers prepare documents in English, while still speaking in either Korean or French. For Korean interpreters working at such conferences, the result is that they must perform simultaneous interpretation between Korean and French while referring to texts that are written in English. Two information streams – one oral and one visual – interact in three languages – Korean, French and English – to constitute quite extreme conditions of simultaneity and thus increases the interpreter's mental processing load. Furthermore, when an interpreter refers to an English text while listening to Korean discourse, s/he may be tempted to lean on the written text because of the syntactic similarities between English and French. This increases the risk of language interference between French – the interpreter's B language – and English, which is often not even the interpreter's C language. Though this is a problem that frequently arises in professional settings, simultaneous interpretation with English text is not dealt with in interpreter training programs. This paper utilizes an experiment with students in an interpreter training course to examine the needs associated with teaching this type of interpretation.

Since 2000, the government of New Brunswick is selecting its own immigrant entrepreneurs, mainly from South Corea and China. In an era of neoliberal policies and practices, these immigrants, who possess huge financial assets, are selected to fix the province's economic woes, which include a high rate of unemployment, an aging population and the inability to retain its youth. While the government of New Brunswick is developing its own strategies through immigration policies, immigrants have their own roadmap. This paper sheds light on the unusual and vulnerable situation of immigrant entrepreneurs in the province.
