AbstractWe argue that family businesses (FBs) will tend to treat their employees with unusual consideration to form a cohesive internal “community”. They are also expected to develop deeper, more extensive “connections” or relationships with outside stakeholders. Both behaviors should increase the viability of a business intended to support an owning family and its later generations. Such social linkages, we believe, may compensate for the lack of capital, product and labor institutional infrastructures in dynamic emerging economies. This survey study of a most challenging emerging market sector, namely, Korean high technology businesses, largely supports these expectations.

The city of Québec has more than one hundred historical monuments within its limits the majority of which are in Old Québec or near the parliament buildings. This historical and sociological analysis exposes the major commemorative themes. The historical characteristics of the city as military stronghold, political capital and religious centre have shaped the relationship of its citizens with their past. Two major waves of commemoration have been identified, each with its distinctive political and esthetic characteristics : the first occurred between 1890 and 1939 and the second from 1980 to the present. In fact, the periods during which these commemorative busts and monuments were created reflect their own historical features such as the converging or diverging interests of the social actors involved. Commemorative dualism is one of the particularly significant general characteristics revealed by this analysis.

us trade policy is guided by three important principles since World War u : reciprocity, the rule of law in international economic relations and the prevalence of American leadership in economic matters. A reevaluation of its economic and security interests in the 1980s has led the us to a new trade policy in the 1990s. However, this new policy has not been met with success so far, except in the Americas with the Project of the Americas. A consensus was reached to create a hemispheric free trade area by January 1, 2006. The Project of the Americas' three main objectives for the us are : to create a hemispheric community led by the us ; to create a new legal framework in the hemisphere better suited to today's world economy ;finally, to use the FTAA in order to build a world economic order according to their interests.

At the end of the Uruguay Round talks, the social dimension to world trade liberalization is still a subject of sharp controversy. The question has come up time and again over the last fifty years, particularly in response to certain American initiatives. It never could provide common ground for the interests of all parties present on the international stage. The possibility of agreeing on its raison d'être has seemed, from that point on, impossibly vain. In a context of increasingly deeper economic integration, in which trade liberalization is not inconsequential to domestic industries, the seriousness of the worker protection issue is no longer debatable. The idea of linking the opening of markets to respect for certain basic social standards seems both unavoidable to some and unacceptable to others. The following article casts a retrospective look on the debates raised during the last few decades over what is now commonly called the "social clause".
