SUMMARYThis paper examines the effects of childhood family structure on patterns of home leaving (route and timing). The analysis uses data from the National Survey of Families and Households, a retrospective study of 13,017 U.S. adults interviewed in 1987 about their past and current family experiences. A competing risks, proportional hazards statistical analysis allows us to evaluate the risks of leaving home by a given route, holding constant the risk of taking other important routes out of the home.Family disruption is linked with leaving home via all routes except college attendance, closely resembling the effects of low parental social class (education and occupational prestige). The effects of family structure and class are particularly marked on leaving home between ages 15 and 18. We interpret the results as indicating the ways the parental home provides the resources needed for a successful launching into adult independence or prompts leaving home either too early, or to new living arrangements likely to make establishing a stable independent adult role set more difficult.

ABSTRACTThis overview reviews the indicators currently used to describe the health status of populations. It emphasizes Quebec's contributions in helping to develop such indicators, including the development of health expectancy indicators; various theories on changes in population health status and longevity; Quebec's role in the international harmonization of health expectancy indicators; and the initial findings emerging from the compilation of health expectancy time series. An appendix offers a brief survey of texts on demographic indicators, an area in which Quebec has come to specialize.

ABSTRACTThis paper studies the Vietnamese family by exploring family structures. A brief analysis of histoncal data from the colonial period is followed by a more detailed examination of data from the World Bank Living Standards Study 1992-93 including data on 4800 households. In addition to presenting the first nationwide findings on the makeup of Vietnamese households, the paper analyzes the data from an individual viewpoint. This approach allows the author to provide an overview of family life at the various stages of life. Overall, the findings show the complexity of the family environment, the importance of intergenerational relations and the lack of a significant increase in the nuclear family in Vietnam.

In debates about social programmes there is an increasing reliance on metaphors inspired by architecture and geography. These are a sign of the rising significance of place and space with respect to contemporary rights and duties of social citizenship. The social architecture of the welfare state is being transformed while its new geography takes an hour-glass shape, as the powers of regulation are increasingly concentrated, on the one hand, at the local or regional level and, on the other hand, at the European level.
