Over the past half-century, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Association of Shinto Shrines have been engaged in collaborative efforts to “restore” Japanese values and traditions that were undermined during the Allied Occupation of Japan. Since the disaster years (1995/2011), LDP Diet members and prime ministers, particularly Prime Minister Abe Shinzō, increased their support for the Shinto political agenda to restore patriotic education, promote Yasukuni Shrine, and revise the Constitution. Following PM Abe's assassination (8 July 2022), the influence of the controversial Unification Church on LDP politicians and their policies has been exposed and generated widespread criticism and public debate. This article reviews these recent developments and identifies the tensions and fundamental contradictions in the core values of Shinto nationalism, which Abe championed for decades, and those promoted by the Unification Church. Investigations and legal proceedings surrounding the incident are ongoing, so it is still uncertain what the fallout will be for both organized religions and the world of Japanese politics.

In 2016, Goblin: The Lonely and Great God, a South Korean television series, was partly filmed in Quebec City. Its popularity in South Korea is without question as large as the fans’ willingness to visit the filming locations. This article documents the film location tourism phenomenon generated by this series in Quebec City. Its innovative contribution lies in the study of the transformation of the circle of representations by modern media. Film-tourists seek to find the filming sites, they reproduce the same images by substituting themselves for the heroes in their photos, but they will also visit non-tourist, off-centre sites, and broadcast new images. “Ordinary sites” thus acquire an extraordinary appeal, demonstrating the strength of the imagination created by the series. The data collected thus illustrate the establishment of the “circle of representations.” The analysis of the tourist fluctuation also shows the variability of the phenomenon of film-tourism. Although the city experienced a notable increase in the number of film-tourists the year following the series’ release, this increase did not last. Despite the destination’s efforts to attract film-tourists, external factors, such as the difficult economic situation, seem to have been responsible for the increase in attendance.

AbstractThe fall of the Berlin Wall has triggered a peaceful revolution of an unprecedented kind in Europe. Germany has become unified, the Soviet Empire has collapsed, the geopolitical balance has been deeply modified, and the will of the Central and Eastern European peoples for a “return” to Europe has made its reunification possible. Now the great challenge for the new generation of European leaders is to perfect the union of the European peoples through the free-willed organisation of peace and cooperation throughout the whole continent. However, the rebuilding of the European continent must not be performed at the expense of the idea of an ambitious European Union.
