AbstractThe systemic changes that happened in Eastern Europe since 1989 produced very different results, depending on countries, regions or social groups. The concept of “transition” has often been used to justify a specific and supposedly definitive social model according to the neoliberal rules. Poland has often occupied in the analysis the role of the “good pupil”, but if we compare the situation of this country with the one prevailing in countries that also have experienced dictatorship, we must then accept some nuances to the teleological visions currently accepted.

For a few decades now, and mainly in the past twenty years, Europe has been under construction. The process aims at creating a bind between people who live in Europe, a feeling of belonging to a political, social, economic community. With a strong desire, however, to preserve the existence of multiple cultures and identites. The question of how Europe should be built emerges in each and every field of human existence and activity. (…)

June 23rd, 2016 Brexit referendum will have incalculable consequences. It may be surprising to see Britain leaving the European Union while UK negotiated some advantageous positions. But a referendum is a risky bet : it allows all opponents to add their voices while the Remaining Campaing had to gather many people who were not ready to give David Cameron a carte blanche (This aspect also explains why Scots could vote for Europe, as their vote was clearly not backing Cameron). Whatever will be happening, this vote is a great victory for populism in Europe. Clairvoyance is urgently needed from the European leaders to relaunch a continental dynamics after this disavowal.

AbstractThe paper puts forward a fresh approach to the concept of rural space with spatial as well as demographic dimensions. In reaction to the limitations of previous work in the field, our aim here is to derive the various and highly complex forms of rurality from the population distribution of three Euro-Mediterranean countries; namely, France, Italy and Spain. After reviewing the literature on the methods of characterizing rural space, we examine the strengths and weaknesses of the different definitions of this space. Next, we propose a method of typology construction rooted in the twin concepts of diffusion and concentration, and continuity and discontinuity. Then we summarize the main features of our statistical and cartographic conclusions on rural classification. Finally, we produce an operational definition of rural space intended to facilitate comparative analysis internationally.
