Bioethics experts played a key role in ensuring a coherent ethical response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the fields of healthcare, public health, and scientific research in Canada. In the province of Quebec, a group of academic and practicing bioethicists met periodically in the early months of the pandemic to discuss approaches and solutions to ethical dilemmas encountered during the crisis. These meetings created the opportunity for a national survey of bioethics practitioners from different fields. The survey, in which forty-five Canadian bioethics practitioners (clinical ethicists, ethicist members of REBs and government health policy ethicists, or any bioethicist practicing outside of academia) participated, explored their concerns, challenges and opportunities during the first wave of the pandemic, with the objective of informing bioethics research about the difficulties experienced by bioethicists “in the field”. Participants reported increased stress levels, increased workloads, and a greater proportion of their work being devoted to public health ethics. Most of their concerns focused on groups other than themselves, such as health professionals, patients, research participants, and people in vulnerable socio-economic situations. An optimism about the future of bioethics was noted due to an increased awareness of the importance of bioethics by the public and by health and research institutions.

The following short text will explore the professional challenges faced by Mr. Davood Salimi, an Iranian immigrant who suffers from hearing, memory, and coordination issues. At Salimi's request, the name of his medical condition will not be disclosed. The article will provide readers with a basic summary of Salimi's biographical information, such as his professional qualifications, and explain the tragic circumstances which led to the development of his medical condition. The invaluable career assistance which AIM CROIT provided for Salimi will also be briefly discussed. In addition, the founding of this organisation and its many accomplishments will be succinctly explained. Finally, the article will conclude with a summary of Salimi's future career goals and his advice for other individuals who suffer from disabilities.

This article offers an analysis of the form and functions of kitchen gardens, the activities and interactions that take place there, and the meanings they hold for their protagonists. Laid out on private land adjoining a main residence, these vegetable gardens reveal a certain way of being in the world and testify to the transformations that have taken place in home gardening in recent decades. An ethnographic survey conducted in the Quebec region revealed the existence of two models of vegetable gardens: the 20th century archetype and the pluriversal garden. The article explores the aesthetic and productive dimensions of these gardens, the particular relationship to nature and non-humans that characterizes them, as well as the main vectors of the moral economy of which they are the expression. If they constitute a source of fresh food, these vegetable gardens are also the symbol of criticisms addressed to the conventional food system and to the consumer society.

Difficulties in defining think tanks complicate efforts to count them and construct meaningful samples, while attempts to define them more precisely often apply arbitrary distinctions. These difficulties are also tied to fundamental ambiguities concerning the nature of their political, scientific, and technocratic functions. This article compares four Canadian organizations (the Mowat Centre, the Parkland Institute, the Manning Centre, and the Broadbent Institute) to discover the dimensions that make up the think tank as a social type. The approach was to examine cases on the fringes of the figure of the think tank in order to assess the hypothesis according to which the tendency of an organization to juggle the logics of different fields (here academic and political) or to be absorbed in the logic of a single field modulates its willingness and capacity to adopt the identity of a think tank. Results suggest an association between a connection to the cultural category of the think tank and the ability of an organization to maintain, sometimes delicately, a dual commitment toward research and action without merging into either of these fields. They suggest that attention to the parameters of variation of these organizations may guide the formulation of more systematic sampling criteria. They also support the idea that the hybrid posture favoured by think tanks is of strategic significance for acting in different arenas of public policy.

Linguistics explained by native speakers, also called naïve linguistics or folk linguistics, amateur linguistics, and in many other ways, is an interesting chapter, albeit elusive, of the social representation of language, i.e. language ideology of a community. In this article we analyze the discourses of the readers of a blog that appears on a national online Italian newspaper. The research discusses on one hand the idea of linguistic norm and of error which readers carry through their queries for clarification of language facts, and on the other hand the spread among non-linguists of the linguistic meta-language for talking about grammar. The conclusion of the research shows a fairly rigid view of the idea of linguistic norm and a very traditional meta-language used to talk about language facts.

This article analyzes the attitudes of students towards languages in general and particularly the indomexicans to know the perception of this sector of the population around these languages. To carry out this research, a questionnaire was applied to 83 young people, of both sexes, who went to the State Public Library. The analysis of the linguistic data focused on the units of information in relation to the attitudes towards the indigenous languages and the social situations that the responses communicated. The results obtained show that, probably, due to the “sensitization” they received at school about cultural diversity, these young people were favorable to indigenous languages, but their desire to learn some of them faded when they were confronted his interests.

That language contact results in linguistic change is a widespread assumption, but enjoys relatively little empirical support. In this paper we propose and test a scientific method to determine the effects that contact languages exert on each other. We illustrate its utility with preposition stranding in North American French, widely believed to result from centuries of intense contact with English. Systematic analyses provide no evidence of convergence, revealing instead that the offending construction arose from analogical extension of a native French construction to a novel context. We conclude that grammatical convergence must be proved on a case-by-case basis, using methodology capable of distinguishing internal from contact-induced change.

Early dating experiences have a significant influence on adolescents' socioemotional development, especially the occurrence of dating violence (DV), which has been found to negatively impact adolescents' self-esteem. While several types of intimate relationships may be experienced by adolescents, such as romantic and dating relationships, no study has yet examined the role of relationship status and gender in the association between DV victimization and self-esteem. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the associations between various forms of DV (i.e., psychological, physical, or sexual) and self-esteem, as well as the interactive effect of gender and relationship status among adolescent victims of DV. The sample comprised 809 adolescents aged between 14 and 19 (M = 16.68, SD = 1.40) who completed online questionnaires. In addition to sociodemographic information, participants also completed self-esteem, DV victimization, and relationship status measures. Results of the analyses of covariance revealed that girls had lower levels of self-esteem than boys. Moreover, among adolescent victims of sexual DV, those in romantic relationships had higher self-esteem than those who were no longer in a relationship. These findings support the importance of considering gender and relationship status when intervening with adolescent victims of DV and promoting positive self-esteem development.

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of Digital Business Strategy (DBS) on income inequality. This study investigates how DBS complements financial development in order to influence income inequality in a large panel of 149 countries relying on the GMM estimations for the period 2012 to 2016. Results show that digitalisation helps reduce inequality across countries that belong to the high and the medium DBS maturity levels. This paper highlights the importance of building a mature DBS both for enhancing the positive effects of technology innovation and for promoting financial development as a solution to income inequality.
