Given that students today are technology natives, unlike teachers, ICT integration represents many issues. This study is an initiative to understand teacher engagement factors when it comes to professional development in ICT. Our objective is to synthesize knowledge about the diverse aspects and factors that influence this type of engagement. This synthesis, undertaken with a knowledge-building approach, presents engagement factors in an online community of practice for professional development (CoPD) under three aspects: accessibility, participation, and appreciation.

Given the large production of video games in Quebec, the province has been able to develop an exceptional context of research partnerships between video game companies and university laboratories, each of which has developed an expertise specific to their field. In this article, the following question will first be asked: what kind of research is carried out in companies? The objective is not to make a systematic survey of the various forms of research carried out within all companies located in Quebec, but rather to identify the main realities experienced in gaming companies in order to answer a second question: what kind of research is not carried out those companies? The answer will be used to illustrate possible partnerships with researchers interested in gaming practices and in gaming communities, a research theme that is not often addressed by companies. Among the university gaming laboratories in Montreal, the example of the laboratory of the Université du Québec à Montréal will be briefly presented in order to situate researches that explicitly aims to understand identification, communication and social dynamics of gaming communities. The article concludes with an exposition of some of the future perspectives of research in this field, mainly related to the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Slot machines are recognized as a particularly risky form of gambling. However, there is a form of slot machine consumption that seems to have largely escaped the notice of regulators and scholars: the streaming of slot machine play on YouTube and other platforms. In this article, we present the results of our qualitative study of 21 slot machine videos. Our study examines how these videos portray gambling and how they align with the norms of YouTube’s platform economy. Our analysis underscores the representation of slot machine gambling in this under-regulated media, emphasizing different tactics of viewer manipulation. We introduce the concept of interpassive gambling to reflect the ways that user-generated videos are a form of diffusion of gambling mechanics beyond traditional gambling venues. We conclude by calling for more scholarly and regulatory attention to this gamblified site of media consumption.

The Roma are the largest ethnic minority in Europe, but few studies have focused on delinquency and victimization among them. This article presents the results of exploratory research on the victimization and delinquency of young Romanian Roma in two cities in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. The study follows a mixed approach that combined 130 hours of participant observation with a self-reported delinquency and victimization survey (N=27). The findings show that the most common instances of victimization involve domestic violence, thefts, and verbal assaults related to begging, while the most common offences committed are brawls and domestic violence, which is frequently bidirectional. There is a correlation between crime and victimization, although the range of victimization suffered is larger than that of offences committed. Victims rarely report incidences of victimization to the authorities, even though their perception of the Swiss police is relatively positive. Despite the small sample and the biases related to this kind of research, this work calls attention to several new elements, such as the role of social media in delinquency, the bidirectionality of intimate partner violence, and the low rate at which victimization is reported to the police. It also suggests relevant subjects for future research.

The Arctic do not elude the extension of the Internet network, supported by fibre optic submarine cables. Several submarine cable projects are in progress, or are already completed in the region. This new route promises a shorter distance, not for the containers this time, but for the transport of data between North America, Europe and Asia. China, which invests in a global Internet infrastructure, The Digital Silk Road, is very interested by this new route and could gain a foothold via the cable project Arctic Connect. In the context of a commercial and technological war between China and the United States, questions arise about the real intentions of China when it comes to this 100 % Chinese Internet network project. The financing and the construction by China of this type of infrastructure, vital for the global economy, might be a means to extend its regional and global influence.

This article describes the pilot of a program called JumpStart Your Learning, a libraryled, pre-entry, online academic skills orientation for incoming undergraduate and graduate students conducted in August 2021. The pilot featured a range of synchronous online workshops, panel discussions, and “Ask Me Anything” sessions over a four-day period, which provided students an opportunity to learn from learning specialists, librarians, peer mentors, professors, academic advisors, and other campus partners. The pilot was attended by 548 unique students with overall workshop and panel attendance totaling 1310. The article provides insight into the inspiration for the pilot, reflects on event planning and logistics, describes the topics covered during the event, and discusses how lessons learned from the 2021 program informed the planning process of the 2022 program, which included both online and in-person elements. The article concludes with recommendations for other library professionals who are interested in undertaking similar orientation programming and encourages them to reflect on how libraries can take a leading role in supporting student transition and academic acculturation if such programming is not currently in place at their institutions.

This study explores the relationship between Canadian millennials' online activities and their attitudes toward politics. We draw upon longitudinal data from the Canadian Youth Study (CANYS), a two-wave survey conducted eight years apart (n = 967), and present models looking at the influence of online activities and the early adoption of Internet on three common attitudes toward politics. The analysis suggests that engaging in interpersonal communication and searching for information online increases political interest. Furthermore, this also increases external political efficacy. Meanwhile, engaging in interpersonal political communication online decreases trust in the federal government, which is otherwise increased by online social networking with friends and family. Early adoption has no effect. Results suggest that online activity has an overall positive effect on attitudes toward politics with a seemingly contradictory effect on trust.

This article explores mediated listening from the perspective of intimacy during the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic. The theoretical frame builds on the literature on listening and presence in mediated environments, audience engagement, and intimacy as meaningful connections. Methodologically, the study is connective ethnography, and the data was collected by collaborative autoethnography. Our data show that listening was an individual sensemaking strategy of the outside world and a means to form connectedness. Threading between different screens on digital platforms caused the collapse of public and private contexts, and through these, particular types of intimacy arose. When the position of academic mothers is often that of a ‘knower,’ the severe crisis compels them to look for receptive ways of knowing, such as careful listening of others. Listening is a means to form belonging and understanding, but from a silent position. We should pay more attention to the silent presences and audiences in contemporary mediated environments.

In a context where the integration of AI into organizations’ processes, products and services is becoming crucial, we carried out a study focused on the development of AI project management skillsand noted the growing importance of soft skills. As these skills are traditionally acquired in a collective work environment, our aim was to capture the collaborative versus individual dimensions in the development of these skills from the point of view of AI project managers. Our text deals with the process of developing a skills repository, co-constructed with experts in the field, as well as the analyses that emerged from this process in terms of the skills required and how these skills are acquired for the development of professional identity. This repository aims to guide training institutions’’ AI management training strategiesso that they can design training adapted to the reality of the workplace, including collaborative learning needs.

In Europe, America and Asia, research into the uses of digital educational technologies and their contributions to teaching and learning has flourished, while in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the exception of a few rare studies in educational science, research has long neglected these uses. The literature highlights shortcomings in terms of access to equipment and interest in certain technical devices. The most widely adopted technology is the cell phone, which is used for both personal and school purposes (Maïdakouale and Fagadé, 2022). This study aims to support the integration of educational digital technologies among a young population already possessing non-formal digital skills. We study the social logics structuring the uses that, themselves, feed them (Paquienséguy, 2012). We also highlight the "new" school sociabilities that these uses bring. As Leveratto and Leontsini (2008) point out, interest in the educational uses of the Internet also requires us to explore its playful and social dimensions, since social availability determines personal commitment to intensive use. We used qualitative and quantitative methods to survey 292 students in Burkina Faso, Gabon and Niger. We show that socio-technical and economic factors are involved in accompanying the digital revolution in these universities from behind the scenes.
