Objective – To assess the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for selective dissemination of information (SDI) and current awareness services (CAS) in university libraries in the South-West zone of Nigeria. Methods – A descriptive research design was adopted. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire administered to a population consisting of 379 librarians, with 353 usable questionnaires retrieved. Results – Findings revealed that most university libraries in the South-West zone of Nigeria do not use ICT in delivery of SDI and CAS. It is evident in this study that despite the known positive effects of ICT in library services, traditional methods were predominantly used for SDI and CAS to the library users. The study revealed that erratic Internet services, insufficient training, inadequate ICT skills, and low support for ICT were hindrances towards ICT use for SDI and CAS. Conclusions – The integration of ICT features in library services for the delivery of CAS and SDI has been a challenge in university libraries in South-West Nigeria. Only a few libraries and a low percentage of librarians had adopted the use of ICT in the delivery of CAS and SDI, while a larger number of libraries resorted to the use of traditional methods. The level of ICT literacy among the librarians in this study is low, as a higher percentage of librarians did not have adequate ICT skill to use available online resources on the Internet and other ICT tools to deliver SDI and CAS in South-West, Nigeria. This is not unconnected to the fact that the training and technical support received by the librarians is inadequate, and the level of support that academic libraries received from their university managements in South-West Nigeria in terms of funding for ICT development is inadequate, which led to low Internet services.

Landscape atlases – photographic collections linking the territory and its occupation – can engage local populations in a participatory process and contribute to the planning of their habitat. Following a perceptive approach borrowed from the territorialist school, two exploratory methods of photograph collection challenged agents with contextual and expert knowledges for the assembly of atlases. They illustrate essential information for an adapted local planning: the “record” of an ever-transforming landscape – the “tangible manifestation of the territory”. Photographs from an online competition and from excursions by the author allow the identification of recurring landscape characters, which inform on the urbanity of Nunavik communities. These characters, observed synchronically, concern formal and relational aspects which define the profound ways of dwelling in the local territorial context. Completed with diachronic observations and a morphotypological approach, this knowledge could incorporate current practices of urban design into an “Inuit urbanism”, informed by the rules of formation obtaining in the current phase of occupation of the territory. These methods, along with community mapping activities, could constitute the role of citizen committees in the production of their habitat and the formulation of shared, self-determined, co-constructed strategic scenarios.

In 1991, the Canadian documentary Starting Fire with Gunpowder was produced, focusing in part on the history of early media productions by the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (IBC). It examined how the creation of Inuktitut media content could be an effective means of creative improvisation, linguistic and cultural preservation, and transmission of traditional knowledge. Almost 20 years later, the Internet serves as one of the primary communicative methods for young Inuit in the Canadian Arctic. However, it remains to be seen whether the quality of Inuktitut media online can compare with the example of linguistic and cultural preservation set by the visionaries of the early IBC. This article challenges prevailing critical approaches to the Inuit as linguistically and culturally vulnerable. It views Inuktitut New Media content as an embodiment of the word airaq (‘edible roots'), used here as a model of strength, resilience, and adaptability. It concludes that the creativity and prolificacy of the early IBC productions should set the standard for a new generation of Inuktitut content creators online.

To date, there is no consensus on the diagnostic criteria for Internet addiction (Hinic, 2011; Tonioni & coll., 2012; Weinstein & Lejoyeux, 2010). Nonetheless, some people consider themselves cyberdependent and request treatment services in the addiction rehabilitation centers (ARC) of the province of Quebec. These admissions have led the Health and Social Services Agency of Montreal to ask for the realization of a descriptive study on Internet addiction. Objectives: 1) Describe the socio-demographical characteristics of cyberdependent individuals receiving treatment in the ARC; 2) Document their associated problems, such as problems related to alcohol and drug abuse, gambling, self-esteem, and symptoms of depression and anxiety.Methodology: The study was conducted in eight ARC's of the province of Quebec. A convenience sample of 57 people was recruited over a period of 24 months, from 2010 to 2012. To participate in this study, individuals had to be 18 years or older, identify themselves as cyberdependent, and request help for an Internet addiction problem in a public ARC. The Internet Addiction Test (Young, 1998), in its validated French version (Khazaal & coll., 2008), was used to assess the severity of Internet use habits. The associated problems were assessed using the following questionnaires: the Beck Anxiety Inventory (Beck, Epstein, Brown & Steer, 1988); the Beck Depression Inventory, in its validated French version (Bourque & Beaudette, 1982); the DÉBA-Alcool/Drogues/Jeu (Dépistage-évaluation du besoin d'aide), an instrument used to screen and assess the need for help in problems related to alcohol, drugs, and gambling (Tremblay & Blanchette-Martin, 2009), and the Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965).Results: Fifty-seven people agreed to participate in the study. A large majority of these cyberdependent individuals were male (88%), the mean age was 30 years old, had low incomes and were living with their parents. They consulted following the pressure of their entourage and reported many consequences due to their Internet addiction problem. They spent, on average, 65.8 hours per week on the Internet and reported having several problematic applications. Amongst these problematic applications, the most frequently reported were the role playing game (MMORPG) (57.8%), the streaming on entertainment sites (35.1%), and the chat rooms (29.8%). Regarding the self-esteem scale, 66.6% of participants presented a very low or low self-esteem, while 21.1% presented an above average self-esteem. According to Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories, 3.5% (n=2) of the sample reached the clinical threshold for depression, while 7.5% (n=4) reached it for anxiety. Almost half (45.6%) of the participants were taking psychotropic medication for a mental health problem, and 33.3% had a chronic physical health problem. Conclusion: This study highlights the characteristics of a still unknown group in the population, that of cyberdependent people. Individuals having an Internet addiction problem live significant consequences due to the loss of control on their Internet use. In addition, when they are admitted into treatment, even if the subjective psychological distress is not always high, participants present a complex clinical profile, where comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception. We believe that the current data show enough similarities with other addictive disorders, to allow clinicians to work taking into consideration their experience with other addictive behaviours.

In 2010, the World Bank launched Urgent: Evoke, an alternate reality game. Conceived in response to the demands of African universities, the game was designed to promote the World Bank Institute's vision of positive global change through social innovation, and made substantial use of Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, personal profiles, and social networks. This article offers a case study of Urgent: Evoke, divided into four sections: first, the potential to use video games as citizenship education tools is discussed; second, the unique game genre (alternate reality games) into which Evoke falls is explained and some possible uses of this genre in higher education are examined; third, the functioning of the Evoke game world is explained; and fourth, the results of the Evoke educational project are assessed. The case study concludes with some commentary on Evoke's ideological message, which those less sympathetic to capitalism may view as problematic.

At the beginning of the second wave of COVID-19, on November 7, 2020, the conference “Questions d'éthique” was held at the Lieu Unique in Nantes (France). Prof. Axel Kahn's presentation focused on the ethical perspective of the relations between information and media, researchers and clinical trials, individual liberty and health democracy, but also the urgency of care, patient triage and confinement. Starting from the indispensable character of “ethics in times of crisis”, the title of his talk, he analyzed his practice through the prism of liberty and responsibility.

This article proposes some reflections on research or interventions relating to issues that concern and affect us. The English term would be “insider”. As researchers and social workers with an immigrant background, our personal experiences are also part of the issues we deal with concerning vulnerable populations: the descendants of racialized migrants, the children of racialized mixed couples, LGBTQ migrants and racialized persons. We will therefore address, through our respective objects of engagement, how working with racialized populations re-actualizes experienced forms of exclusion while giving rise to new questionings feeding our research.

The objective of this research is to understand the transformation mechanisms of WhatsApp groups into conducive socio-digital fora to collaborative consumption in the Benin context. The data collected by qualitative approach were subject to similarity analysis and comprehensive lexical Factorial Correspondence Analysis (FCA). It appears that this change in the status of WhatsApp groups is the result of permanent dialectical interactions between group members in a spirit of reciprocity. “Friendship / intimacy” and “brotherhood” appear to be favorable factors to the inception of these fora.
