Based on a questionnaire survey supported by interviews, this article examines the characteristics of writers’ engagement on social networks and its effects on the online reputation. Our results show that social networks are first used for communication and promotional purposes by writers, who develop forms of digital identity management and self-marketing. Their motivations oscillate between the pleasure and the taste they feel for this online sharing activity and the positive consequences they can bring in terms of visibility and reputation. Also, we seek to identify the explanatory factors of writers’ online reputation. While several factors play a significant role (type of writing, intensity and nature of digital practices), success on social networks is primarily superimposed with editorial success, the online audiences tending to focus around the most established authors in the publishing world.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of WhatsApp use for education and determine the opinions of students towards the process. The study was designed in mixed research model which combines both qualitative and quantitative data. In the quantitative aspect of the study, quasi-experimental design, with a pretest-posttest control group, was used and the data were analyzed by two factor variance analysis for mixed measurements. The analysis indicated that both learning environments have different effects on the success of students and that supporting the traditional environment by using WhatsApp is more effective for the increase of success. For the qualitative aspect of the study, content analysis techniques were employed to analyze the data which were collected by open-ended question forms. The analysis showed that students developed positive opinions towards the use of WhatsApp in their courses. They demanded the same practice in their other courses as well. They reported that learning could also take place unconsciously and the messages with images were more effective for their learning. However, a few students have expressed adverse opinions about the timing of some posts and the redundant posts within the group. Finally, it is suggested that use of WhatsApp in education process be encouraged as a supportive technology.

This paper documents the services and changes that library staff at a group of 15 Canadian university research libraries highlighted on their main pandemic pages and social media accounts during the early days of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Findings suggest that libraries in the samples adopted the following services and changes: closing the physical libraries; suspending all physical collection services and in-person events; continuing to provide virtual reference services; promoting access and usage of electronic collections; suspending late fees and renewing checked-out items with a new due date; and advising users to wait before returning borrowed items. Notably, all libraries in this study are operating as full full-scale as digital libraries. This study will provide lessons learned to other libraries around the world to help in reviewing their own operational policies for coping with the current COVID-19 pandemic and for future global public health crises.

Libraries have existed for millennia, but today many question their necessity. In an ever more digital and connected world, do we still need places of books in our towns, colleges, or schools? If libraries aren't about books, what are they about? In Expect More: Demanding Better Libraries For Today's Complex World, Lankes walks you through what to expect out of your library. Lankes argues that, to thrive, communities need libraries that go beyond bricks and mortar, and beyond books and literature. We need to expect more out of our libraries. They should be places of learning and advocates for our communities in terms of privacy, intellectual property, and economic development. Expect More is a rallying call to communities to raise the bar, and their expectations, for great libraries.

This article presents the results of a collaborative study dealing with the process of ethical reflection among college-level teachers and involving two teacher groups. The results are presented along with a description of the categories that emerged from analysis of the reflection, namely categories relating to the dynamic of the reflection process and to the types, references or subjects of statements used. In addition to describing elements of the interactional dynamic observed in the discussions between the participants, the article brings to light key moments of this dynamic and of the evolution of ethical reflection.

The already important gap between the digital practices of pupils and those of teachers seems to be widening. Indeed, while young people's digital practices tend to be playful and communication orientated, teacher practices rely on global technical skills and cross-field know-how (Baron & Bruillard, 2001). Our findings suggest that in France some prospective teachers, like their prospective pupils, have digital practices derived from a primary knowledge acquired through growing up in a digital-technology-rich childhood environment. Yet unlike their prospective pupils, these prospective teachers have also gained other forms of digital practices and a digital culture that draws on secondary knowledge.
