This article is based on the observation that human resources management (HRM) is one of the main causes of failure for start-up. HRM is strongly influenced by the personal characteristics of the entrepreneur, due to the centralization of his power. While his narcissistic traits have been studied in the literature, those relating to empathy have so far been overlooked, despite the fact that the entrepreneur maintains close relationships with his employees.

The image we have of tags seems never to have been updated since they first appeared on the streets of New York. However, the practice behind these tags, which dates at least 50 years, has crossed territorial borders and exceeded temporal expectations. Its omnipresence in our day-to-day does not fail to remind us of its power. In fact, the followers have multiplied and proliferated beyond the megacities where their presence is trivialized. The objective of this article is to define the connections between this last assertion and the evolution of the social-spatial structure of taggers. Based on interviews and accounts from participant observation over two years (from 2018 to 2020) within a group of taggers in Paris and elsewhere in metropolitan France, two forms of relationships emerge: the relationship between taggers and the territory, and the relationship between the territory and the phenomena of globalization. The results obtained support the idea that globalized regional mutations reconfigure the social space of taggers. Accordingly, by admitting that taggers remained confined within their original structure, in which an “imagined community” is forged, an updated form of community is revealed.

As part of a research project examining the living conditions of asylum seekers on the Greek island of Samos, I was led to visit the former refugee camp located on the hills overlooking the town of Vathy. After first outlining the everyday life and survival strategies of asylum seekers on the island, this article analyzes the spatial organization of the camp and the role of so-called “decorative” objects within the makeshift tents of the former refugee camp (now dismantled). The visit was conducted with Malik, a former asylum seeker (now a recognized refugee) who lived in the camp for eighteen months. This study explores the effects of violence—conceptualized here through the notion of suffocation—in order to account for the hardships experienced by asylum seekers on the island. The objects encountered during this visit, as well as the spatial arrangements of the tents, stand in stark contrast to the rudimentary and unsanitary living conditions. These decorative objects, understood as practices of embellishment, contribute to the production of a familiar space within a hostile environment and function as boundary objects. In this way, the ethnographic walk presented in this article sheds light on the (almost vital) necessity of seeking out objects that interrupt violence by mobilizing the registers of “the beautiful,” “the familiar,” and “the sensory.”

The resurgence of mining in France raises controversies related to the social acceptability of projects. While mining, largely abandoned since the 1960 s, is being reconsidered to meet the demands of the energy and industrial transition, projects such as the lithium mine in Echassières (Allier) face significant opposition. These controversies highlight tensions between economic, environmental, and social imperatives. To better understand and manage these dynamics, a tool, the “Mining Controversy Dashboard” (TCM), has been developed based on the Canadian Social Risk Index (IRS) (Bergeron et al ., 2015). This tool, adapted to the European context, provides a structured approach to analyse and visualize stakeholder perceptions. It comprises two components: a controversy matrix, derived from surveys sent to stakeholders (evaluating economic, environmental, and consultation dimensions), and a territorial profile, offering a detailed contextual analysis based on statistical and historical data. The TCM aims to identify sensitive aspects of projects, facilitate dialogue, and inform public debates. However, some limitations remain: low survey participation, restricted access to data, and a simplified representation of local realities. Tested on two projects in France, this tool demonstrates its usefulness in structuring debates, while requiring further development to expand its applicability. The TCM positions itself as a dialogue facilitator, enabling the co-construction or consensual abandonment of contentious mining projects.

Changes in land use, including urbanization, are one of the main causes of biodiversity decline, due to the loss and fragmentation of natural environments. Initiatives exist, including in cities, to restore corridors and facilitate wildlife movement. For example, hedgehog crossings are installed to connect private or public green spaces and thus facilitate the movement of this endangered species. Through a questionnaire survey carried out in the agglomeration of Caen (France), our study aims to identify the factors influencing the social acceptability of the installation of a hedgehog crossing in private gardens. Our results show that residents are more likely to accept the creation of a hedgehog crossing when they have a degree above the bachelor’s level, when they develop their gardens in favour of biodiversity, and when they give the hedgehog a positive appreciation and a useful role for their gardens. The article also highlights obstacles to the creation of hedgehog crossings, especially for residents who consider the animal to be already in their garden or who are reluctant to break through their walls. These results thus provide valuable insights on the factors to be considered in awareness campaigns promoting urban biodiversity and offer guidance to local decisionmakers and actors on potential obstacles and levers when implementing measures favourable to urban biodiversity.

The city of Québec has more than one hundred historical monuments within its limits the majority of which are in Old Québec or near the parliament buildings. This historical and sociological analysis exposes the major commemorative themes. The historical characteristics of the city as military stronghold, political capital and religious centre have shaped the relationship of its citizens with their past. Two major waves of commemoration have been identified, each with its distinctive political and esthetic characteristics : the first occurred between 1890 and 1939 and the second from 1980 to the present. In fact, the periods during which these commemorative busts and monuments were created reflect their own historical features such as the converging or diverging interests of the social actors involved. Commemorative dualism is one of the particularly significant general characteristics revealed by this analysis.

French colonization in North America was characterized by a metis model of relations with the Natives whose cultures have inspired social critique of Western World. After the Conquest and the cession in 1763, the francophones repressed the Indian part of themselves to avoid a stigma and allow themselves to claim collective rights as a civilized people. Beside their long common history and deep mutual cultural influences, the French-Canadians shared an analogous status of a conquered people in its childhood. Caught in the ambiguous position of colonized colonisers, the French-Canadians defined their cultural inheritance as exclusively French. Having to justify their close relations with the Indians, they proclaimed having been the torch carriers of faith and civilization among Indians. Never in their mission, would have they fallen in savagery. French Canada would then be geographically in America, but not culturally, because, according to its elite, without any trace of miscegenation. Debunking this fear to pass for a savage would probably reveal a sense being ashamed of oneself.

The future of war fare, its persistence or Us obsolescence has constituted one of the most hotly debated themes in international relations during the past decade. The purpose of the present essay is to provide a bird's eye view of this debate, but also a critical review of its main arguments.

In May 1997, the General Assembly of United Nations Organisation adopted the Convention on the law of the non-navigational uses of international watercourses. This convention is the result of several years of negotiations and work among the community of international jurists. While it provides solutions to the international watercourses management, it raises also some questions about the implementation of essential principles like the notion of « basin », the « equitable and reasonable utilisation and participation », or the obligation « to prevent the causing of significant harm ». Through the recent history of River Nile basin, which is often taken as example, this article aims to analyse and to question the place and the role of the international law in the international watercourses management and in conflicts regulation.
