In 1831, a Cherokee chief said : « The race of the red man in America has become small ; the white race has become great and famous. » Why ? Epidemics ? Technological backwardness ? The power of the invader whose population increased by a coefficient of anywhere between 8 and 16 per century ? Impossible resistance ? Adam Smith's answer : the clash between humanity's childhood age of hunting and civilization's adult age of commerce. The Savage will eventually disappear. Tocqueville thought this to be true and inevitable. Beaumont saw a tragedy that could only be understood from within. Gallatin urged action, the creation of an Indian State on the shores of the Pacific and the necessary and pressing transition to masculine agriculture and private property. The Indians will then merge into the republic.

This interview with Uta Papen, prepared by Karine Collette with the goal of creating a reflexive dialogue, addresses key aspects of literacy research in Quebec—as represented by the articles published in this edition of Globe—from the perspective of the dominant theoretical approach in the English speaking world, namely the New Literacy Studies. The goal is to show how an Anglo-American scholar, with a background in social anthropology and ethnography, views literacy studies in Quebec, and thereby encourage further discussion and reflection. Although presented in the form of an interview, Papen's comments are in no way spontaneous. She received in advance both the texts on which she would comment and the questions she would be asked. After being transcribed, her answers were reviewed and, where necessary, edited. The result is a “dialogue” in which the perspectives of multiple authors and research traditions mee – repeating, interrogating, and debating each other along the way. The interaction of these different voices reveals some points of convergence, especially regarding the need to study and describe local and cultural literacies, examining them within their specific contexts, and analyzing their occasional points of contact. Indeed, socio-cultural and ideological perspectives on literacy studies remain rare in Quebec, where research tends to be shaped by pragmatic aims and the resulting studies tend to adopt a functional perspective.

AbstractIn 1987, historian Jacques Bernier estimated that despite the publication between 1976 and 1986 of a number of prominent papers, the history of medicine and health in French Canada was still in its infancy. Since then, this particular field of study has boomed. The present article examines published studies gathered according to the various themes which have been favoured from 1987 to 2002 and concern the history of medicine and health in French Canada, so as to illustrate the gains of the past sixteen years. In our conclusion, we shall discuss the advancement of the history of medicine and health in French Canada in connection with the various elements suggested by historians Ludmilla Jordonova and Thomas Brown when considering the maturity of a given field of study. We shall identify a number of factors limiting its consolidation.

Research is an occupation that is conducive to the emergence of ethical issues, particularly because it is linked to conflicts of interest that are sometimes difficult to manage and is carried out in a highly competitive context that values performance. While the ethical issues in the clinical practice of occupational therapy are beginning to be documented, the ethical issues experienced by occupational therapy researchers and the means they use to manage these issues are virtually undocumented. This article presents the results of a qualitative study that documented the means (macro, meso and micro) that are proposed by occupational therapist-researchers to address ethical issues in research. Eleven occupational therapists (n=11) participated in the research and share the means they are using or consider to deal with the ethical issues they experience as researchers. The means proposed by occupational therapists echo many of the means suggested in the literature, although some of those proposed in the literature regarding the relationship to be established with research participants are little discussed by our participants, which is surprising given the humanistic values that underlie the profession of occupational therapy. In the end, this article, which presents a synthesis of both the means identified in the literature to resolve ethical issues in research and those discussed by participants, aims to empower occupational therapist-researchers to resolve the issues raised by academic research while remaining true to the values of the profession.

Standardising learning content and teaching approaches is not considered to be the best practice in contemporary education. This approach does not differentiate learners based on their individual abilities and preferences. The present research integrates a pedagogical theory Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with an information system (IS) theory Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). It aims to examine the effectiveness of a technology-enhanced traditional web design course on blended e-learning acceptance and learner satisfaction in which UDL principles (multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement) were implemented. This casts some light on the role of addressing curricula limitations on learner perceptions and e-learning adoption. A mixed research design combining survey and action methods was followed. Overall, 92 undergraduate students took part in the study. The research instrument was validated first. Subsequently, partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to identify the path associated among constructs used in the proposed framework. The extended model accounted for 45.4% and 41.6% of the variance of perceived satisfaction and behavioural intention respectively. The findings suggest that using educational technologies to address curricula limitations is a bridge to enhancing learner willingness to accept e-learning.

The emergence of a giant like China changes the landscape. The potential localization of multinational companies' R&D centers into emerging countries changes the analytical perspective. This phenomenon moves the knowledge frontier and creates a real paradigm change in terms of innovation and technology transfer. On the one hand, we confirm the global trend of knowledge sources implied in previous studies and we demonstrate that multinationals might now choose emergent countries as a strategic place to externalize R&D. On the other hand, we go further by empirically showing the phenomena of reverse innovation and reverse technology transfer in the pharmaceutical sector.
