This article depicts an analysis of the media production of a controversial figure, Canadian professor and clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, as a fragment of popular culture. Based on the methods of literary criticism and on the comparison, interpretation of themes and style, with the support of images and wordings circulating in the media, the proposed critical reflection does not concern his ideas, but how the media influenced their audiences by creating an enemy through their representations of this public intellectual. The text is an attempt by the author, who lived under a totalitarian communist regime, to demonstrate how propaganda techniques, such as virtue signalling, stigmatize.

Objective: This article describes using a Research Contribution Framework (RCF) (Morton, 2015a), to plan and document the progress of knowledge mobilization (KMb) efforts for the Make Resilience Matter (MRM) for Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) study. Research uptake, use and impact activities were planned for this project designed to identify how to foster resilience-informed practice with children exposed to IPV. This KMb strategy is useful for planning and considering how we engage knowledge users, context, environmental impact, unexpected developments, and the complexities of doing research and mobilizing results in the “real world” of practice. The benefits of mapping RCF onto KMb planning and lessons learned may be transferred to other projects. Method: First we outline RCF; second, we describe the MRM project; third we apply RCF to the MRM project detailing a process for engaging knowledge users and planning and tracking research uptake, use and impact. The trans-theoretical theory of change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1982) is used to understand readiness to change in relation to research uptake and use. An overarching feminist theoretical understanding of gender based violence (Hawkesworth, 2006; Heise, 1998) helps to inform our awareness of the socio-political context. Results: Research uptake, use, and impact as applied to the MRM project are presented. An outcomes chain (Morton, 2015a) is offered to help trace engagement/involvement, activities/outputs, awareness/reactions, knowledge/attitudes, and anticipated practice behaviour change. Four guiding principles emerged from our experience which may helpto inform future KMb efforts.

The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of postgraduate students in open distance e-learning (ODeL) institutions regarding what constitutes effective supervision practices that contribute to their academic success. This study adopted a qualitative research approach, sampling 10 postgraduate students pursuing their master’s degrees in an ODeL environment through purposive sampling. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that clear communication and feedback, supportive relationships, and active engagement are key elements of effective supervision in ODeL, enhancing postgraduate students' academic success. Supervisors play a crucial role by providing both academic and emotional support through mentorship and motivation, fostering student achievement. The study recommends that supervisors hold regularly scheduled online meetings with their students, as this practice can significantly improve the effectiveness of supervision in ODeL. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of providing training for supervisors in humanising pedagogy, specifically designed for ODeL contexts. This training aims to equip supervisors with the necessary skills to effectively engage with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. It also emphasises the importance of teaching supervisors to respect students regardless of their educational background, beliefs, or cultural differences.

Despite their importance to the stability and health of coastal environments, mangroves are under significant pressure, mostly from anthropogenic origins. The objectives are to measure the reduction of mangrove areas between 2007 and 2020 in the urban area of Greater Libreville (Gabon) and to identify the drivers of deforestation. To do this, two complementary methods were applied: an analysis of the land use dynamics of three characteristic sites, based on orthophotos of very high resolution provided by Maxar Technologies, and direct observations. Thus, between 2007 and 2020, land use changes in Okala-Angondjé, Lowé and Igoumié are mainly marked by the progression of buildings and their encroachment on vegetation. All sites have experienced a net mangrove regression: 35.6 ha in Okala-Angondjé, 46.9 ha in Lowé and 36.6 ha in Igoumié, resulting in an overall deforestation rate of 0.8%/year. Anthropogenic retreats represent 57% of the regressions in Okala-Angondjé, 96% in Lowé River and 78% in Igoumié area. The drivers of deforestation are multiple: residential expansions, installation of fishing districts, hotel or tourist establishments, creation and extension of garbage dumps, industrialization and port development and energy installations. Other economic activities (agriculture, livestock and aquaculture) have caused some deforestation of mangroves, but to a lesser extent. However, the annual rate of urban mangrove deforestation in Gabon's Estuary Province is higher than the mean rate of global mangrove deforestation.

The purpose of this paper is simultaneously to investigate researcher use and awareness of author addenda (e.g., the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition [SPARC] author addendum) and publisher awareness and acceptance of the same. Researchers at U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities institutions were targeted, and a survey was sent to faculty, graduate, and postdoctoral associations to share with their members. Following a low response rate, the survey was sent to a listserv of copyright librarians in Canada with a message that encouraged them to share it with researchers at their institutions. Eighty-one researchers responded to the survey. Eighty-six percent of researchers (n = 70) indicated that they were unaware of author addenda. Researchers were asked to identify how often they negotiate their publishing agreements, and of those who answered the question, 84.2% (n = 64) responded that they never negotiate. Thirteen publishers or publishing organizations were contacted and asked if they would participate in phone interviews about copyright practices and author addenda. Two large multinational publishers agreed to participate. Both publishers indicated that very few authors attempt to negotiate their agreements and that of those who choose to negotiate, even fewer use addenda. Both indicated that they do not accept the SPARC author addendum. This study’s small sample sizes mean that more information needs to be collected before firm conclusions can be drawn. Based on the responses from the two large publishers, the best way to help Tri-Agency-funded researchers may be for libraries and the Tri-Agency to negotiate with publishers for funder-based exceptions.

This article proposes the construction of a systemic model of digital education as part of research applied to public policy (French Ministry of Education). Considering the digital domain in its pervasiveness, it highlights the importance of a complex approach to understanding the transformation of practices. As an applied research modality, we present digital theme groups (GTnum). The methodological approach combines a reflexive posture informed by research contributions, conceptual choices centered on digital humanities and the systems approach, participatory research and open science via the Hypotheses "Education, digital and research" notebook. As a result, our modeling is centered on a "digital environment" and six units of action put to the test via the GTnum themes. We interpret these results through a comparison with other systemic frameworks, an application to the axes of digital transformation in academies, a prospective reflection with the development of generative AI and perspectives for participatory research. Finally, the article discusses the limits and contributions of this approach: variability in the understanding of the issues at stake and in the integration of research contributions, as well as avenues for anticipating a new digital configuration with the place of AI.

Linguistic risks are situations in which learners are pushed out of their comfort zone to use the target language in meaningful and authentic settings. This article outlines a novel pedagogical and research approach to language learning through linguistic risk-taking. I review the construct of linguistic risk from interdisciplinary perspectives and describe the context, rationale, and development of an innovative initiative for supporting French and English language learning at the University of Ottawa, the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world. Data from 554 participants collected through a Linguistic Risk-Taking Passport, a tool allowing learners to self-report risk-taking patterns, propose additional risks, and add qualitative comments are analyzed to validate the approach. Avenues for transformation of the tool into a digital app and its relevance to other contexts and other languages are also discussed.

This article aims to theorize the concept of “lyricapitalism” to spark a dialogue around the constellation of antinomies that popular music in Nigeria, especially hip-hop, navigates, grapples with, and articulates. By lyricapitalism, I mean lyrical representations of capitalist ideologies, most notably obsession with money, sleeplessness, and cyber-scam culture. I situate lyricapitalism in relation toJonathan Crary’s framework of 24/7 capitalism and Cedric Robinson’s idea of racial capitalism. I argue that Nigerian hip-hop’s lyricapitalism must be interrogated and deconstructed in the context of local and global power relations that marginalize most Nigerian youths and colonially configure them for disposability. I conclude that a new subculture of Nigerian hip-hop is emerging that represents counterculture as authenticity, aesthetics, resistance, and subversion.
