This paper is the result of eight years of work on the concept of editorialization that was done in the context of the international seminar “Écritures numériques et éditorialisation”, which I have been co-organizing with Nicolas Sauret since 2008. I propose a definition of editorialization as the set of dynamics that produce and structure digital space. These dynamics can be understood as the interactions of individual and collective actions within a particular digital environment. Starting from this definition I try to describe how authority works in digital space.

This article examines Jacques Derrida's concept of undecidability in machine and human translation. Defined as the very condition of possibility of acting and deciding (Caputo 1997: 137), undecidability is an essential component of decision-making. Using Derrida's concept as a starting point for thinking the intricacies of translation decision processes, this article explores manifestations of undecidability in the translations of an extract from Henri Meschonnic's Traduire au XXIe siècle (2008). Deliberately selected because of its direct resonance with the notion of undecidability, Meschonnic's comment claims that, except for automated translations, no practice of translation is possible without reflexive decision-making (Meschonnic 2008: 60). The observations discussed in this article challenge clear-cut distinctions between human and automated translations by showing that programmability and undecidability are features shared by both humans and machines in translation. As such, this study suggests that uncertainty, as a pre-condition of ethical decision-making, must be fostered within mechanical translations themselves, and that in-depth training in translation technology is necessary for a responsible use of machine translation.

SummaryThe internet network revolutionizes little by little the practices of the researchers as well from the point of view of their information retrievals as from the point of view of the diffusion of their work. If the opportunity to reach a colossal mass of information very simply is a particularly attractive perspective for every researcher in biology, this study puts in evidence that the discovery of relevant information in the field of biology in this « ocean » turns out relatively difficult, and this in spite of the existence of an increasing number of search tools at the disposal of the Internet users. Furthermore, the results presented suggest that the use of non-specialized search engines and meta-engines seems preferable with that of specific search engines in the field of the biology and with that of non-specialized or specific directories in biology.

The Google Docs application is part of Google Workspace for Education, a suite of cloud-based productivity and collaboration tools that are now ubiquitous in middle and high school classrooms. While there is an expanding body of research documenting the benefits of using Google Docs to support collaborative writing projects, there exists few qualitative studies detailing how cloud-based tools are integrated into courses that meet face-to-face on an ongoing basis. This case study explores how an experienced high school English teacher facilitated a collaborative writing project, in which students used Google Docs to co-write a story. The students were instructed to work on their stories asynchronously from home and synchronously during face-to-face classes. Data sources included field notes from class observations, reflections written by the teacher, semi-structured interviews with the teacher, focus group interviews with the students, and the shared Google Docs. This article describes affordances and constraints associated with the pedagogical supports provided during the collaborative writing process and offers recommendations for teachers who intend to use Google Docs to facilitate collaborative writing projects.
