This article attempts to grasp Jean-François Mattéi's thought by exploring the theme of duality. Why do we make this choice ? Because a philosopher can see here Mattéi's fidelity to the Greek tradition in its constant move from one pole to the other. As illustrations, we take into consideration the following couples : philosophy/sophistry, wonder/indignation, civilization/barbarism, Europe and opposites ; they all create tensions requiring a great deal of exploration and thought.

The obscurity of René Char, common place of criticism, repels or fascinates the reader. This reception, acute in the aftermath of the war, where it takes place in the context of a poetry resulting from the Resistance, is active until today. If we try to find reasons for it, we will observe that obscurity is a constitutive part of Charian poetics, that it has its own forms and historical stakes. Taking it seriously, beyond the polemics, therefore commits us to reconsider our readers' expectations in terms of poetic communication. Perhaps it is necessary to accept to establish differently the connection between reading and life.
