The following treatment of U.S.-Canada relations begins with the Ottawa-Quebec nexus and its impact upon the connection with the United States. Then the analysis proceeds through bilateral relations. The essay concludes with a look at multilateral interactions from the focus of both Canada and the United States. Thus the analysis proceeds from the most specific to the most general, and from the most internalized to the most external. Concluding with a paradox, the argument of the essay is that despite the end of the Cold War and the disappearance of imminent external threat, uncertainty has never loomed larger in the relation of Canada to its southern neighbor, for all parts of Canada including Quebec, and for the Canadian polity as a whole.

The purpose of the present paper is to move closer to two registers of knowledge : SMEs' offshoring and SMEs' networks. In order to, the Uppsala model and isomorphism concept to highlight the role of networks, inter-organizational or interpersonal, on SMEs' offshoring decisions. This analysis of the literature will be confronted to a qualitative study realized on two SMEs belonging to the same network. The results shows that networks can encourage a SMEs' offshoring-induced via a mimetic isomorphism and can stop this strategy via a coercive isomorphism.

AbstractThe academic challenges of ethnocultural diversity in Montreal, often fuelled by immigration, have usually been been analysed in terms of academic success. However, negative social interactions or lack of positive interactions experienced by students constitute a risk for their psychosocial development. For immigrant students, that risk becomes more and more complex by being grafted with other challenges : a loss of landmarks, a new social network, intensive decoding of codes of sociability, etc. Based on an ethnographic approach combining observation meetings and interviews with various protagonists (children, parents, teachers), this article describes the dynamics of social interaction in pluri-ethnic classes and presents two distinct relational profiles (rejected and popular). The benefits of a finely tuned understanding of relational dynamics are analysed: for class management in a pluri-ethnic context, for a better understanding of the school-related stress experienced by immigrant students and as well as for an effective support by the teacher and the parents of students' socialization process at school.

This article highlights the challenges of integration and academic success of international students in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean CEGEPs, a region with low ethnocultural density. This region has been welcoming these students for over a decade. Although present, there is scarce information on the internationalization of education phenomenon in the CEGEPs of the region. The objective of this research is to gain a better understanding of the challenges related to the integration and academic success of international students. To do so, individual interviews were conducted with 21 international students. Results show that students generally have a positive image of the CEGEPs and their teachers. Also, the migratory experience is marked by differences between the country of origin and the country of migration for studies. According to these students, integration is not “a long calm river”; they must persevere to succeed during their academic progress. This article provides pedagogical and social contributions by highlighting the importance of the role of teachers, CEGEPs, and the collegiate and civil communities in the integration and academic success of international students.

Listening to spatialized sound by electronic means was one of the new experiences that awaited listeners in the years following the Second World War. As far as new forms of audiotechnical listening in France goes, one of the stereophonic listening situations that had the greatest impact on audiences was son et lumière, the first of which was presented at the Chambord château in 1952 with music composed by Maurice Jarre. The soundtrack of this show was the diffused via a novel stereophonic setup. These son et lumière shows initiated many listeners to new forms of directional listening a skill that would then be called upon by a generation of avant-garde composers. This article explores the musical dimension of these son et lumière presentations in order to evaluate their impact on the development of new generalized forms of listening that conquer space through stereophony.

AbstractDistancing itself from logocentric methodologies that privilege narrative and text in memory research, this paper insists on the importance of the senses in practices of social recall. Through ethnographic analysis of an open-air museum commemorating Soviet history in today's Lithuania, it examines differential ways in which sight and taste are mobilized as memory media for linking the nation's socialist past with its “capitalist” present. The paper also argues that this museum constitutes an apt ethnographic locus in which to critique unproblematic unilinear approaches to the ongoing systemic change in the European East after Communist rule.
