Recently translated in French, the novel De pertes en fils by Howard Roiter, a translation by Pier-Pascale Boulanger of Here comes Hymie published in 1990, describes the sometimes twisted journeys of newcomers in Montreal in the first half of the twentieth century. Between father and son, both from Hungary, and people surrounding them, the “American” adventure will be different for everyone of them, but the result is often the same : the story of a loss. With black humor, this novel in translation allows us to reflect on the loss that is never complete as long as the story of this loss can still be told.
