This article forms part of a team research project on youth access to justice that focuses on youth participation in legal proceedings in Quebec. The limited extent of existing interdisciplinary exchange in the field of youth protection justified the organization of a round-table discussion to address challenges, experiences and lessons to be learned regarding Quebec's child welfare and protection system. That discussion, presented here, illustrates key deficiencies that restrict youth's access to justice and suggests directions for intervention in support of children's rights. The bringing together of actors in child protection indicates the need to create significant space for dialogue among stakeholders, and potential pathways for improving socio-legal practices and access to justice for youth in Quebec.

The introduction and appropriation of Irish theatre in English in Toronto and in French in Montreal are compared: certain artists resist the specificity of the works produced and make use of clichés related to Irish identity to insure their acceptability to targeted audiences, while others embrace the uniqueness of works penned by Mark O'Rowe, Marina Carr and Brian Friel. Paradoxically, it would appear that interlinguistic translation in Quebec helps artists better understand texts, which in turn allows them to preserve aesthetic specificities of works produced in French. As such, this case study puts into question the traditional perspective of translation, often seen as a process that seeks to minimize forms of loss.

This paper reflects on the terms used in investigating news translation, with a special focus on the term transediting as it was suggested in a paper by Stetting. After a summary of Stetting's original arguments, some research into news translation is presented, illustrating main methods, findings, and concepts used. The paper presents arguments put forward by various scholars for using or rejecting the term translation for describing the complex processes of translation in the context of mass media and illustrates which alternative terms are used. It is shown that Stetting's original aim in coining the term transediting was to raise awareness of translation being more than a pure replacement of a source text by an equivalent target text. Transformations as identified in news translation, however, are characteristic of translation more generally. Therefore, the paper finally reflects on whether there is a need to keep the term transediting and whether it has any explanatory power for describing the practices in news translation.

AbstractThe opera Barnardo Boys, with music by Clifford Crawley and libretto by David Helwig, was premiered in Kingston, Ontario in May 1982. Inspired by the example of Benjamin Britten, the creators of the opera regarded community involvement and cooperation between amateurs and professionals as essential to the production of the work. There was only one imported professional singer in the cast—Jan Rubes, who was hired to play the lead role of Albert Ashby. Both the libretto and the music of the opera make use of a combination of pre-existing and newly created source materials. This approach is seen to be typical of a Canadian preference for the genre of documentary opera, which parallels an engagement with historical fiction on the part of Canadian novelists.

Today, the “crisis of masculinity” discourse is a “cliché”. But this alleged crisis occurs while men still hold more power and privileges than women. It is therefore important to critically investigate the rhetoric about the “crisis of masculinity” and assess its political meaning. In order to do so, we begin by looking at Western history and show that men have been claiming to be in crisis for the last five centuries. After discussing more specifically three historical periods (England in the seventeenth century, France during the 1789 Revolution, and the West in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century), we pay special attention to contemporary discourse. The analysis confirms that the rhetoric about “crisis of masculinity” carries a critique of feminism and a rejection of gender equality. This discourse also justifies the (re)affirmation of conventional masculinity.
