Popular tales (or tales from the oral tradition) are among the first objects of study in ethnology/folklore. They belong to the realm of orality, often described as “oral literature” or “orature.” This article first presents a historiography of the ethnological study of tales, showing how researchers have shifted their gaze from the “text” to the “context,” i.e., from the object itself to the context in which it is uttered and to the person telling the story. Secondly, to provide an example of what characterizes the oral tale and storytellers of the past, two contemporary storytellers associated with the transmission of a heritage of oral tales—Michel Faubert and Fred Pellerin—are studied in order to illustrate their concept of the tale, their influences, and their storytelling art, while attempting to determine if they are part of the tradition. For these storytellers, the art of the tale consists in making images appear: performance is what nourishes the imagination, and the storyteller's relation with the audience is what makes the tale come alive and what sustains it as an oral form. Today's ethnological research on tales includes modern, multiple and innovative forms emerging from a dynamic process of communication and transmission in which storytellers' performativity plays a key role. From an ethnological perspective, in other words, the art of storytelling is not a kind of folklore that has been relegated to museums but a living tradition.

In her article, Annaëlle Winand introduces us to the use of archives by artists for experimental purposes in films and videos. With an overview of current literature on the subject, she seeks to identify the preoccupations of these researchers. What are artists' interests in archives ? What issues are related to the mingling of cinema and archives ? First, the author brings into question the definition of what is meant by ‘archive'. She reviews a structure of analysis that is common to the literature on the subject : temporality, historicity, and memory – all three common to both archives and cinema. Finally, she promotes collaboration among artists, archivists, and researchers, as a way of coming at a deeper understanding of archives, but also the problems their use presents, including preservation, conservation, and access, especially in the digital era.The use of archives in films by artists for experimental purposes is especially interesting because they see the documents outside their context and in a new light.

The historiography of popular theatre in France has primarily focussed on the influence of popular education and syndicalism to understand the emergence of this vast political and esthetical movement during the turn of the xxth century. While not erroneous this genealogy does not allow us to grasp the diversified experiences of popular theatre. This article aims at assessing the underrated influence of Barrès on popular theatre through an exploration of Jacques Copeau's career who publishes in 1941 – while Marshal Pétain is in power – a book entitled Le théâtre populaire.

In the heart of Dassa-Zoumè, the capital of the department "des Collines", in north central Benin, two places symbolize the ever-renewed vitality of the collective memory of a kingdom whose origins date back to the 16th century, Adjiba (2006). Indeed, Places of Memory are crucibles for anchoring memory, but of a generally collective memory. Their vitality is often the subject of periodic maintenance so that the memory which constitutes their vital essence does not fade. In Benin's urban or rural communities, the celebration of community memory through places dedicated to this effect is quite common. This article proposes however to present the very interesting cases of Ègbakokou and Yaka, two places which represented the dual roots of royal power in Idaatcha land. Their symbolism rhymes with memory and power. Rooted deeply in the structural organization of the kingdom of Igbo Idaatcha, these two places constitute among the Oman-Jagou, two other sides of the same reality: the expression and the manifestation of power. If the Jagou (king) reigns over Igbo Idaatcha and sits in Egbakokou, the Obaloké, the spiritual leader and the first religious authority of the kingdom sits in Yaka.
