Focusing on director Ang Lee’s films The Wedding Banquet and Brokeback Mountain, this paper explores the ways in which Lee’s articulation of queer intimacy in liberal spaces reproduces the regulatory functions of patriarchal, late-capitalist Eurocentric discourses of modernity.

With a sample of 22,113 students from the 7th to the 12th grade in New Brunswick, the determinants of resilience and academic achievement were identified at the provincial level and for each of the province’s seven health zones. To do so, this study used a three-step methodology. The first was two frequentist logistic regressions to do a preliminary sorting of the determinants. The second was a series of Bayesian logistic regressions with 20,000 MCMC simulations to narrow the estimations, and finally, probability calculations were run with fictitious student profiles.

This article explores the representation of sex between women in an understudied archive: commentaries on Juvenal’s Satires from antiquity to the end of the fifteenth century. By tracking the changes in glosses to a passage in the Sixth Satire that refers to sex between women, it contributes to our understanding of how and when the discourse on sex between women changed with the rise of humanism and the increased availability of classical texts after the advent of print in Europe. The article also addresses the vexed question of “lesbian” sex and female pleasure as understood in early modernity by considering the interpretations offered for Juvenal’s mention of urinating women and their urine—which was sometimes taken to be female sperm generated through sexual contact between women. The article tracks how the implications of this generation are addressed in different commentaries to either emphasize or downplay female pleasure.

In the 1580s, Sir Philip Sidney set about writing his major work, Arcadia. The unfinished composition of this huge pastoral romance stretched over several years, and it was published posthumously. Its dissemination abroad, and notably in France, was rapid. Arcadia was in fact translated several times from the beginning of the seventeenth century, thanks to a handful of French scholars who readily crossed the channel to refine their understanding of the English language. Moreover, the pastoral romance was adapted three times for the French stage between the outset of the seventeenth century and 1642, by Galaut, La Calprenède and Mareschal successively. Thus literary trajectories and singular dramatic continuities emerge, which lead to the questioning of both the mechanisms of theatrical adaption and the historical foundations of cultural transfers between France and England.

The praxis of sociocultural community development often posits that sociocultural community developers initiate cultural actions in their role as agents of State policies. I contend, however, that it remains possible for marginalized groups to be the source of these actions. I demonstrate this through a case study, the LGBT Pride parades. By operationalizing a cultural action that acknowledges social actors’ capacity for action, we examine if the relevant traits can be found in the parades. Although they are a site of tensions, notably between assimilation and subversive politics, inclusion and homogeneity, consumerism and autonomous solidarity, and although there is indeed a risk of depoliticization and adoption of consumerist logic, they nonetheless were initiated autonomously. This invites us to rethink the range of possible involvement from cultural animation.

AbstractPsychosocial prevention is often, and mistakenly, disparaged or approached with unwarranted familiarity. A number of factors could provide a partial explanation for this mistake: confused rea-tions to the medical model, an unfortunate association of the terms "preventive" and "community," lack of distinction between three levels of prevention, misunderstandings around the concept of risk factor, and an overly general definition of the concept of promotion. One specific fact about psychopathology is that it does not fit well into the dichotomous "before / after" appearance of symptoms. This is why the preventive field must identify its targets in terms of etiological rather than symptomological factors. Thus, for us, true prevention must include only proactive interventions meant either for neutralization of pathological influences, or for promotion of areas that are aimed at making the population healthier.

AbstractThe socio-cultural context following the Quiet Revolution has created a favorable moment for the implementation of feminist writing and translation practices, termed « re-belles et infidèles » by Susanne De Lotbinière Harwood. The purpose of this article is to examine the effect of the reinsertion of these transgressive practices in a new context, namely, post-Franco Spain. With this in mind, we will analyze Barroco al alba (1998), the Spanish translation of Nicole Brossard's novel Baroque d'aube (1995), the only one by this author that has been translated in Spain. We will show that « re-belles et infidèles » practices are possible because there already exists a corpus of feminist writing and thus a favorable context for the implementation of these transgressive practices. Nevertheless, the Spanish context of the 90s not being receptive to these feminist practices, Barroco al alba has gone unnoticed in Spain, not only in the subfield of large-scale cultural production (Bourdieu, 1992), but also in the restricted production subfield.
