"Why a poet in these times of epistemological distress in the social sciences?"... After Holderlin, we may wish to begin our reflexion with this question. This article shares some of the author's impressions of the performance given by the italian ethno-musicologist and artist Giovanna Marini. G. Marini is a cantastorie, a story-singer, who has presented her work for some years now in both Europe and America. Her stories and music recreate the daily life of ordinary people in Italy which she discovered through her "field work". The "example" of Marini leads the author to question certain themes which characterize the rhetoric and practice of the social sciences: social existence; interpretation, and formalization. He examines the scientific enterprize as a form of violence on reality, an enterprize which was born with the Inquisition. The social sciences, he suggests, can be something other than sciences of repression if they are willing to be seduced by the poet's wink and to listen what Kundera calls "the laughter of God".

In the fall of 2017, I found a series of books with the title Lands and Peoples at the University of Toronto Swap Shop. I went through the illustrations in the books and stared at the images featuring palm trees for longer than I would usually spend on any image.
