The composer Gilles Tremblay published several texts on his creative reasoning, his aesthetics and his spiritual quest. in addition to these publications, analysis of unpublished archival material reveals the basis for this orientation. His correspondence with Father Paul Vanier, s.j., François Houang, Oratorian and the essayist Pierre Vadeboncoeur demonstrates both his profound faith and social commitment, the two cornerstones of his thought and works.

Although its relation to geography has not yet been explained fully, the notion of subject casts new light on the individual. The notion is a reference to the difficult issue concerning the individual's awareness of his/her situation and the range of his/her freedom or autonomy to act on the physical and social determinants that shape his behaviour and the decisions he/she makes. Our paper bears successively on the major issues connected to the role of the subject in geography, the heuristics of the places where the subject can be monitored and lastly, his/her relationship to development, the problem of enunciation and the challenge that writing poses.
