This article identifies the forms and the uses of electronic books in universities. The electronic books referred to in this article allude to the contents to be read by reading devices, or the contents intended to be read using a personal computer with an interface, known as numeric books for personal computers. To distinguish the type of electronic books available in universities, we provide a short list of the major numeric suppliers, followed by a list of university libraries that offer reading devices. Secondly, we identify the evaluation and experimental projects using electronic books (principally reading devices) in university libraries or in the classroom. Lastly, we present the results of a study of Québec university libraries intended to survey the state of the art of the use of electronic books and to forecast their use by the students.

This article originates from our doctoral research that focuses on the relationships between thoughtful professional practices and educational wellbeing among high school teachers. This study focuses on the contribution of Q methodology to the exploration of high school teachers' reflections on their professional practices. Thus, 13 teachers were asked to rank 14 statements on an answer sheet, according to their level of agreement with the contents thereof. The storage of the participants was analysed using the softwares QDA Miner and PQMethod. Our results suggest that the Q methodology can be considered a useful tool for the study of teachers' reflections on their professional practices.

In 2020 in Quebec, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of many musical events. In addition to the concerts, it was also the jam sessions that had to stop. These events usually bring together music lovers for collective improvisation sessions framed by rules that vary depending on the location, the participants, and the genre of music. This article focuses more specifically on a community of electronic music producers and fans who have chosen to transpose into the digital environment the jam event they used to organize. Our research aims to understand what digital transposition does to collective creation and through which technical devices it materializes. In the face of both technical and organizational constraints and limitations, the meaning of the jam is evolving from music played together to music produced and composed collectively. Thus, our research shows that the will to develop a temporary collective, common project encourages participants to negotiate with the potential format of the event.

From the first experiments, the association between literature and computing has aroused enthusiasm, but has also provoked criticism. Confronted with the increasing influence of big companies on digital creation and reading, many authors and teachers have actually yielded to disillusionment. The objective of the archaeological exploration I propose in this article, is to step back from the ideologies that characterize both the fatalist and the enchanted discourses. I will examine some key steps in the relationship between literature and computers, focusing on the literary forms written and published on this device. I will also historical and contemporary works that take into account the evidences and the ‘unthoughts' of this complex relation, and illustrate the possibilities to explore the relationship between literature and computing in full awareness of the ambiguities and fields of tension.

The integrated system of computer assisted decision- making applied to the spatial management of the Outaouais region (SIADO) illustrates the integrated and negociated management of a territory- From this point of view, this article relates to the participative and environmental dimensions of the introduction of a sustainable form of development. The SIADO consists of software (GéoDécision) integrating an analytical decision-making dimension and a spatially referenced data base (BDRS) organised arround a territorial information system based on an ecological reference framework. GéoDécision is made up of four componends : GéoML for the management of metadata ; GIS for spatial analysis ; DecisionLab for murticriteria analysis : and Internet, ft is designed to be used with a management system incorporating the various parties involved. Amongst the different applications of this method, the setting up of surveillance priorities for the municipal water supply sources of the Outaouais region is presented as an illustration of the system's potential.

Publishers and librarians, the intermediaries in the document chain, are increasingly involved in the electronic dissemination of information projects. At the same time, they continue to meet the reader's need for printed material. The different approaches used to insure this co-habitation can be summarised as follows: (1) produce the printed copy then generate electronic versions, (2) produce both formats at the same time, and (3) produce both formats using a single source document containing all the semantic information required for both operations. This article discusses the main advantages of the third option and describes an application developed in pilot project of scholarly journals at the Presses de l'Université de Montréal. The authors discuss the choice of dissemination formats and storage. The SGML format was chosen because of its ability to integrate, its durability, and the semantic richness it expresses. The pilot project (Érudit) described in this article consists in developing a highly automated chain of operations using SGML, a format that will soon be replaced by the XML format. The SGML format will automatically generate the HTML versions, a format widely used on the Web, as well as the print formats, such as PostScript and PDF, used respectively for printing on paper and printing from a distance.

This article focusses on the professional representations toward the socio-judicial intervention of 37 stakeholder involved in the response to domestic violence in Quebec. It aims to highlight the main conceptions of these interveners to define and orient this mode of intervention. It also intends to identify the characteristics that influence these representations. The lexicometric analyses of the 37 individual interviews carried out revealed that judicial intervention, protection of persons, helping relationship and professionalism constitute the main universes of meaning of the participants. These analyses also reveal that the anchoring of these interveners in their field of practice and discipline tends to favour a distinctive language among them. The implications of these results on professional collaboration in domestic violence are discussed, highlighting certain contexts where such collaboration appears to be more necessary.
