AbstractThe impact of free trade on the Canadian economy has recently been largely debated. Yet what do Québec's manufacturers really think? This article attempts to answer that question and establish a link between the level of technological penetration in a company and its top manager's attitude towards free trade.

The composite image as it is used today since the emergence of mediatic image, and in particular since the propagation of digital technologies applied to images, is defined as a homogeneous visual object composed from heterogeneous elements. However, in this article, the idea of a compositing carried out in real time is questioned. In this particular type of compositing, unlike a combination made from sources which are not co-present, there is constant coexistence of heterogeneous elements assembled, creating an experience of the composite which can at any time become an image (capture of screen or photographic or videographic). It is therefore no longer just a question of a composite image, but of the experience of the composite. To support this point, this article proposes to compare three types of projections that produce composite in real space, creating a mixed reality, to then come back to the notion of composite and identify its material character. Then is analyzed, through an analogy with the industrial technique of projection molding, the way in which the nesting of images occurs in space.

At the ministère des Communications of the Government of Québec, an original solution was devised to assist project coordinators in the analysis and the retrieval of a mass of full-text information. The Système d'aide à la gestion des évaluations environnementales (SAGÉE) is based on a combination of approaches and technologies (microcomputing, expert systems, hypertext, full-text data bases and bibliographic data bases). The solutions met the various needs and characteristics of the data to be managed. The systems are outlined in a tabular form that indicate the technical and human requirements as well as the benefits. Further information is provided on the Système d'information sur les dossiers de la Direction des évaluations environnementales (SIDDÉE), the electronic library of documents produced by the Department, the EVALEN data base which provides access to the technical and scientific documents, SATO (Système d'analyse de textes par ordinateur), and the assistance system that generates the directive. Several tables support the article.

This article presents the development and testing of a computer program for semi-automatic production of concept maps. This technique derived from information extraction intends to provide a simple and significant representation of the content of one or many texts by a knowledge diagram. The application was tested with two text corpora chosen for covering two themes coming from the Programme de formation de l'école québécoise of Secondary 4 in science and technology. The very encouraging results demonstrate the potential of this approach for easing the construction of concept maps, a process that is usually performed by humans. The results arouse as well some questions about the current methods for creating and assessing concept maps.

eTests is a free software that can be used to offer web-based multiple-choice formative assessment questionnaires. The assessments are formative because each choice is linked with complementary information in the form of hints if the answer is incorrect or comments if the answer is correct. Instant feedback allows students to correct any errors or confirm their reasoning. The answers are recorded so that individual or group performance can be monitored. This transfers responsibility to the learners by helping them compare themselves with their peers. The teachers can perform an edumetric analysis of the distribution of the answers to detect resolution difficulties, which could be the sign of a cognitive obstacle in the learning process. Creating increasingly complex sequences of questions can refine the diagnosis of any such obstacles.
