AbstractThe current situation in the field of machine translation (MT) is not too encouraging: for various reasons, cost-effectiveness requirements are rarely met, and this prevents translators from venturing into the technology. Machine pre-translation (MPT) is an original approach aiming primarily at cost-effectiveness, so that translators using MPT are encouraged to re-think their working methods and to become creatively involved in designing tools better suited to their needs. MPT produces a partially translated version of the source text, leaving the translator in complete control of the actual translation process. Cost-effectiveness in this context is due primarily to the modest amount of resources drained from the user.

In this paper, we analyse the development of videotex. Drawing tessons from the British, French and German case, we show that quasivertical integration, necessary for the service to take off, has been missing, but in the French case.PTT's as public administrations, have had two handicaps :— because of their monopoly position, they have been victim of their suppliers opportunism : there was no competition to give an incentive for close cooperation ;— being an administration, PTT's could not integrate backwards to cope with this opportunism. This has contributed to delay the diffusion of the new service.

Some banking and monetary incidences of electronic payment systemsIn the context of the development of the Internet, numerous electronic payment systems have been set up in order to secure on line payments. The object of the paper precisely consists in taking the measure of these evolutions to question some banking and monetary incidences of the development of these SPE. In a first part, we propose a typology of the SPE. In a second part, we examine the conditions of the coexistence of these spe on the Internet in order to analyze, in a third part, the banking and monetary incidences of the development of these SPE.

This study describes the sociosemantic forms of love as well as the romantic expectations and paradoxes as they are reflected by the themes evoked by Quebec youth to describe their ideal romantic experience. A total of 6,961 young Quebecers aged 14 to 19 enrolled in schools described their ideal love experience, either one they have experienced or one they wish for. A lexical and semantic analysis, performed with Sémato software, has identified six dominant semantic forms of ideal love : 1) the centrality of fidelity, respect and authenticity ; 2) sensuality (kissing and embracing) ; 3) finding ideal love in each other's company and concrete activities ; 4) the importance of passion, the magic (for both genders), and especially for boys, pleasure ; 5) establishing ideal love in the future through shared plans such as union and children ; and 6) consolidating the couple in specific places, in everyday life or creating tangible memories. These semantic forms are hypothesized to have solved problems and paradoxes throughout the history of love and to reflect new, emerging problems in contemporary love relationships. Gender differences in the expression of the sociosemantic forms are also discussed.

This article presents research that has developed a comparative portrait preferred by practicing teachers in preschool, primary and secondary contexts for the development of professional skills related to the profile repository teacher education activities in Quebec. The perceived usefulness of these activities was measured. This research used the survey technique and a questionnaire was developed. The results indicate that the proposed activities are used at varying frequencies according to the gender, number of years of experience, the order and the teaching field. However, the development of certain skills is neglected, which raises many questions. We expose the process and some results.

This correlational quantitative study explores the relationship between the self-efficacy belief related to learning or using French as a second language, and the use of learning strategies among first-year university students from immersion studying French as a second language. We have discovered that the self-efficacy belief of our participants is high. Learning strategies are used rather frequently, however compensation strategies are favoured. While self-efficacy belief is tied to the use of strategies in a majority of contexts and domains of expertise, this is generally not the case among our participants. A possible explanation for this result is that immersion pedagogy delivers an incomplete picture of the learning and performance tasks. This has a tendency to discourage the use of learning strategies. We call for further studies with an overall objective to help students develop an optimistic and solid sense of self-efficacy in French.

In Québec (Canada), the American cancer-root (Conopholis americana [L.] Wallr.) is an obligate parasite that grows on the roots of red oak (Quercus rubra L.). Designated as vulnerable in the province, this plant is much rarer than its host and is restricted to a few south-facing rocky slopes. Following the discovery of a population of about 2,000 stems in the Rawdon area, 2 hypotheses were explored to try to explain the current known distribution of the species: 1) insufficient survey effort and 2) habitat quality. However, the results obtained did not clearly support either of these hypotheses. Random factors, such as dispersal by black bear and white-tailed deer, may be involved.
