It has long been perceived wisdom that single people are those least likely to own a pet. The 2010 Emploi du temps (Time Use) survey confirms this pattern, while also making it possible to examine the activities and time shared with pets. It also allows an analysis of the terms people use to describe the activities carried out with their pets. We show that single people who own a pet spend more time with it, especially playing together with it. We also show that women and the elderly use language from a register that could be described as “anthropomorphic” to describe the way their pets fit into their daily lives more than other groups. It explains why single people use “anthropomorphic” language more than others, since they are more likely to be women and elderly people.

Summary : Memory deficit and aging : The effect of categorical and specific cues on a word-list recall. The two experiments reported here investigated the question of age-related deficit in recall with the use of retrieval cues. In Exp. I, we have tried by using categorical cues to determine if the memory deficit of the elderly in recall memory tasks may be the result of a slowing down linked to the memory search processes. The results suggest that the elderly show a significant improvment in performance when presented at the output with the cues which were at hand on input. These observations tend to support the idea that aging is accompanied by a worsening of the memory search processes. In Exp. II, it is proposed that age related deficit in recall can also be determined by a decrease in the effectiveness of use of contextually specifie retrieval eues. The results show that the elderly seem capable of carrying out a functional specific encoding at input ; the difficultes in this situation again seem linked to a deficit in memory search processes.Key words : aging, cued recall, encoding, memory search.

Broker of the virtual : the controversial access to on-line medical information in Mali Telemedicine is at the core of international discourses related to health in developing countries. However, there are few evidence of Internet access by health staff in these countries and knowledge on its social uses is scarce. Based on the results of a qualitative research we conducted in 2007, this paper describes the social uses of telemedicine in Mali. It argues that the hierarchy within the health staff structures the social uses of Internet. Challenging the ideal of transparency of Internet, the paper shows the emergence of a new actor – the “ broker of the virtual”– mediating the relation between Internet and health professionals. Hence, the power dimension – inscribed in the social relations within the health staff– is a key element for the understanding of the actual uses of telemedicine.

AbstractThere has been little research to date on adolescent daily travel patterns as linked to the characteristics of their residential neighbourhood and the location of their educational establishments. In the present qualitative enquiry we have analyzed the travelling habits of 30 adolescents living in the peripheral areas of the CUQ (Quebec City urban community), and concluded as to their significance. The results confirm that daily mobility is dependent on being driven to school by parents, or taking the school bus. Because of the long distances involved, due to the wide dispersion of businesses, equipment and services over the area concerned, it is almost impossible to walk or even cycle to one's destination, and the lack or inefficiency of public transport does not encourage its use. The potential consequences of such subservient mobility on the development and habits of adolescents are discussed in the conclusion of this paper, and additional related research avenues are suggested.

SummaryIn general, teacher training is envisaged in terms of transmission/construction of knowledge and competencies, and trainers most often place value on a utilitarian logic, as least in a formal sense. However, certain significant events are not explained using this logic. These situations are analyzed based on the theory of the “Gift” in cases of spontaneous help and advice between students, teacher mentors, and teacher trainers. The analysis shows that nature of relationships, being either those of confidence or defiance, that develop between trainers and their students can impact on teacher training. These links show the presence of cycles of gift and of vengeance that facilitate or prevent the transfer of knowledge to newly arrived teachers.

Digital technologies are now well established in music education programs. However, musicians-teachers do not yet have philosophical foundations that take into account the changes caused by ICT' use in music education. This article aims to set out the main philosophical issues related to ICT's integration in music education. To do this, we first present the main arguments for and against ICT's integration in the field of education in general, in order to situate the subject in a more global context. We then discuss ICT from the specific angle of music education. More precisely, we give a picture of the effects that ICT have on the current musical environment and we offer a definition of ICT in the context of music education. We then present the philosophical issues concerning ICT's integration in music education around three areas: the pedagogical, the societal, and the professional.
