POLEMICIST'S CORNER Jean-Pierre Berlan — Patenting the living : Progress or crime ? The genetic-industrial cartel, draped in a cloak of philanthropy and progress, has succeeded in slapping a patent on the living in 1980 in the United States and in 1998 in the European Union, with the 98/44 directive which France has just transposed. The World Trade Organisation demands it to be extended to the whole world. Its consequences for people, especially those of the Third World, will be tragic in the twin domains of applied biology : agriculture and health.

Until now, the study of reasoning include inside interlocutions (language aspect of dialogs between 2 individuals or more) is made with pragmatic models emanated from linguistic and psychological approaches. The observation that we follow now in the framework of interlocution logic aims at deepening the assumption done about the way to proceed. In the particular case of this paper, we improve interlocution logic with the study of the cognitive domain of interlocution 1) by investigating conceivable reasonings done by the speakers to represent and understand the position they are, 2) by making clear the followed reasonings with the natural deduction procedure, 3) by adding an default operator to outstrip classic logics power, 4) and at the end by transposing these mecanisms to explain the behavior of speakers.

Women are under-represented among software developers, in spite of several political programs and initiatives promoting employment equity in these sectors, in North America and European Union as well. Young girls' educational choices can partly explain this absence, but just partly. These women are leaving their jobs in much larger proportions than their male counterparts, while in this sector we notice a labour shortage. Work and personal life balance contributes to understanding the situation. Project management produces exclusion effect on women that can be accounted for by a flexibility requirement, entailing unlimited, unplanned and unpaid overtime. In this article, we argue that the professionalization model followed by project managers induces a professional ethos that promotes complying with such requirements and de facto promotes the exclusion effect more than acting as a buffer against it.

The research concerns the study of the effects of different practices of formative assessment on student self-regulation, in the context of inquiry-based science teaching. An indicator grid is constructed to analyze in situ processes, and two teaching situations are compared. The first corresponds to formative assessment such as teachers implement it in their daily practice. The second concerns the assessment practices implemented by the same teachers the following year, after a reflective workshop with the researchers. After confirming through a statistical analysis that teachers implement different modalities of formative assessment from one year to the next, we describe the evaluative practices of teachers and their effects on students. Our results show a better balance in the use of different formative assessment modalities by the teachers in the second situation and a more efficient self-regulation by the students in the proposed task.

A significant part of the vast quantity of information produced worldwide is numeric and comes in several formats: text, data bases, sound, film, and image. For cultural institutions, traditionally responsible for the acquisition and preservation of the cultural heritage, it has become very important to know which materials should be conserved for future generations and how these materials should be selected and conserved. This gigantic treasure trove of numeric data, produced in all domains of human activity and designed to be accessed by computers, could be lost if specific techniques and policies are not developed with its conservation in mind. UNESCO's interest in this issue comes a no surprise. This international organisation exists partly to promote the conservation and the enjoyment of the cultural, scientific and information heritage of humanity. Therefore, it could not neglect the growing numeric heritage and its vulnerability.
