In an open university such as Télé-université (TELUQ) having delivered distance training for over 40 years and online courses and programs for over twenty years, the integration of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) takes forms that are different from a campus university offering mainly classroom instruction. To clarify the challenges, a pilot project was carried out at the end of 2014 to design, produce and deliver on an international scale, two courses using a MOOC approach. The objectives of the project were to evaluate the new possibilities offered by the instructional approach adopted in most MOOCs, compared to those actually in use for distance education at TELUQ; to establish a design process for massive delivery of existing courses; to elaborate and enact a communication and a student recruitment strategy for these courses; and finally to design a generic MOOC model taking in account the context of a distance university like TELUQ. This article reports on the realization of the pilot project and provides a synthesis of its results.

This study examined the role of emotional competence in the educational success of adult students in vocational training in Quebec. A questionnaire measuring emotional competence, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and educational success was administered to 177 vocational training students during and after their training. Results suggest that basic emotional skills are directly related to student's educational success. For students with low anxiety and depressive symptoms, high emotional regulation helps achieve educational success, which is not the case for students with more severe symptoms. Prioritization of interventions for at-risk students is discussed.

We present a study about the teaching of digital literature in French courses, within the context of four secondary education classes (highschool) [project « lecture-littérature-numérique-2 »]. This project examines the integration of digital literature inside the French curriculum through the creation of innovative teaching method. Two different sets of data are analysed (teachers' representations before and after the teaching sequence ; planification of the teaching and learning sequences). Thus, we aim to explore what the teachers declared and the effective interest in digital literature, as well as how the subject taught may evolve when reading a selection of digital literary works.

Agency is a concept that is increasingly used in educational research. The lack of conceptual clarity calls for an answer to the following question: how is teacher agency defined in empirical studies? To answer this question, we conducted a systematic review of the literature using EPPI (evidence for policy and practice information) approach. The 160 articles found in three databases were analyzed to propose a French definition of teacher agency that respects the themes present in the identified definitions. The definition focuses on actions and their context.

The use of the notion of "inclusion" represents a paradigm shift in French society since the early 2000s: It implies an adaptation of society to all citizens. But how can we make inclusive society a reality for people with disabilities? We chose to question the inclusive potential of the use of digital technologies by people with disabilities in the context of medical and social institutions in France. Our epistemological posture is anthropological: in observing this inclusive potential, we analyze social phenomena of more general scope, in particular the question of social inequalities. A situation of isolation favors the emergence of negative social representations of persons with disabilities. These social representations, articulated with a situation of dependence, lead to a lack of self-esteem among the actors concerned. These social inequalities are obstacles to the process of appropriation of digital technologies. So how can we reduce social barriers to e-inclusion? We will see to what extent our methods of accompanying the use of the touch pad promote learners’ awareness of their abilities, strengthen their self-esteem and help to transform the negative representations they have of themselves. Finally, we will see how the development of their digital practices encourages their social participation and transforms the organization of the institutions responsible for accompanying them.

The study aims to develop a questionnaire on Problematic use of Facebook (PUF). Given the lack of studies in this field, a review of literature on the problematic Use of the Internet (adapted to Facebook) allowed to retain three dimensions (Loss of control, Neglect, Distraction). Following verification of the items by experts, a pretest was conducted (n=66 students in a university course). A total of 925 students/workers (from a Quebec University) responded to the final version of the questionnaire. Results support a model with three correlated factors. This questionnaire will contribute to the knowledge on PUF.

Research shows that access to healthcare services in French is deficient in Francophone minority communities. This language barrier is alarming as it can have negative impacts on the quality and safety of care provided for Francophone patients. Faced with this reality, teleconsultation is a promising technological solution to enhance the offer of services in French for Francophone minority communities. Thus, this article presents a critical view on the use of teleconsultation by addressing its associated benefits and limitations. The possibilities this technology offers to enhance health services in French to Francophones living in a linguistic minority community will also be addressed by taking into account the experience with teleconsultation of French-speaking patients and healthcare providers at Montfort Hospital, a Francophone community hospital in Ontario.

On October 6, 2020, Quebec, along with some 40 other states, gave the green light to a contact tracing application based on technology developed by Apple and Google to combat COVID-19. Contact tracing applications, however, raise a number of issues related to democratic rights and social justice, most notably privacy and equality in the face of a technology to which not everyone has access. How did this object become an object of convergence in the use of digital surveillance ? The argument developed in this article suggests that mass adoption masks power dynamics between developers, civil society, public health authorities and governments in regard to the design of technologies used for pandemic management. Apple, Google and their supporters have succeeded in normalizing a technology that materializes a distrust of the state. This analysis illuminates the power dynamics behind the promotion of technical tools in the fight against COVID-19, as well as the blind spots generated by the primacy of privacy.
