The reply of Firmin Paris (pseudonym of Father Maxime Hudon) to Louis Fréchette's language column, "Corrigeons-nous!" in La Presse (1899), cannot be analyzed strictly from a linguistic point of view. It should also be understood as a more personal attack that reflected a deeper ideological conflict among liberals and conservatives rather than a simple reaction to linguistic issues. Read this way, Paris' language column in La Défense serves as a pretext for a societal debate conveyed through a language dispute. As a contribution to French Canadian intellectual history, this paper examines the content of Firmin Paris' response within the tradition of linguistics chronicles. The selected methodological approach uses discourse analysis theories enhanced by a sociohistorical perspective.
