Based on the case study of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, this article questions the historiography's tendency to address the process of medicalization in China in the early twentieth century from the cases of Beijing and Shanghai. By highlighting the limitations and bias of the Rockefeller Foundation's archives, unavoidable for research on the subject, it raises the idea that these sources could have affected research approach and contributed to a certain lack of interest for medicalizing efforts in Chinese outlying regions like Guangdong.
