If the present status of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in Canada does not appear to have much in common with Vietnamese medicine in colonial French Indochina, this article proposes a genealogy of traditional medicines that bridges these two political, legal institutional and professional spaces. It will put into perspective the process whereby the CAM was domesticated, the participation of “traditional” healers in this process, as well as the weight placed by popular expectation (and demands) on the construction of an integrated approach to health in a society that was both mixed and profoundly dynamic. In so doing, this article aims to help reconsider the historiography health globalization and medicalization, and to underline the importance of a postcolonial approach to the history of alternative medicine.
