Urban linguistic landscapes offer an unsuspected richness in the way communication is made towards the users of the city. The innumerable inscriptions that take place along the streets often call for a wealth of inventiveness, combining words and images, the linguistic landscapes blending with the cultural landscapes of which they are inseparable. We thought it would be interesting to look at the linguistic landscapes of a small town that is part of a large agglomeration, Montpellier (France). We investigated a neighbouring town, Castelnau-le-Lez, by focusing on purely graphic elements of stable signage and official communication for information purposes, and by questioning the use, visibility and intentionality of the languages present in this space.

I propose to describe the ways in which my research in political anthropology in rural areas that have experienced colonial governments (French in New Caledonia, Belgian in the Democratic Republic of Congo) has led me to reflect on the contributions and difficulties of using (private, missionary, administrative) archives in relation to the understanding of contemporary (colonial or post-colonial) social situations. I will focus particularly on the conditions of production, conservation, and access to archives relevant to a political anthropology of the contemporary. Along the way, I will question the nature of the links that may exist between state production of archives on colonized social worlds and indirect rule, based on my practice of research with archives.

Affinity tourism seems to have aroused the interest of social science researchers in recent years in connection with the rise of international migration in the context of globalization. This type of tourism questions the personal and social relationship to places established in the context of a return journey to the land of “origins.” In an attempt to understand the driving forces behind this affinity tourism, the aim of this article is to identify the images and representations of the destination “Algeria” among the children of immigrants. This type of mobility, beyond the search for a simple change of scenery, questions the nature of tourist travel and its motivations. To conduct this study, we favoured an exploratory qualitative method based on focus groups. It is a first milestone in a wider survey envisaged in order to examine in depth the motivations and mental constructions linked to this travel experience in Algeria.

This article focuses primarily on a language group that, by and large, flies under the radar of federal government policies: Quebec's 6.5 million Francophones. After identifying some sources of concern about the future of French as a common public language in Quebec, I will attempt to explain the causes, taking inspiration from the work of demolinguists René Houle and Jean-Pierre Corbeil. The problems posed by the consequences for Quebec of Canadian federal policies will then be discussed, policies that make it difficult to integrate migrants into a society that seeks to make French the common public language of Quebec.

If the surname, given names, date of birth, filiation as well as physical characteristics are elements for determining a person's specific identity, then logically, religion must also be a factor contributing to the establishment of one's identity.

« Les féminazis c'est les pires » : autopsie langagière et enjeux sociaux d'une injure antiféministe
More informationThe aim of this paper is to propose a study of the circulation of the word feminazi and the social representations it conveys. In order to do this, a corpus is studied, made up of media texts and comments from social networks, in order to obtain a cohesive and diverse approach to better understand the contexts of use of the word. With an approach combining discourse analysis and digital humanities, this work on language violence is informed by textual statistics, as well as an approach based on argumentation. Furthermore, this paper is also enriched by the introduction of a corpus of memes – these graphic and textual signs used and produced online to provide commentary on social issues.

The development of the blue economy in Togo inevitably involves mastering knowledge of the maritime sector. However, we note that the mobilization of knowledge in this area is characterized by enormous challenges in terms of research and research infrastructures. This research, by combining documentary analysis and in-depth individual interviews with 65 resource people involved in State action at sea, aims to highlight the contribution of maritime research and research infrastructures in the promotion of the blue economy in Togo. The results of the study indicate that the country has a deficit in scientific knowledge and in terms of research infrastructures in the maritime, which would be sector capable of guiding public action in the formulation of decisions.

Since French laïcité forbids the State to interfere directly with the content of religious training programs, various actors, mainly academics or senior civil servants, have been reflecting for nearly a quarter of a century on the possibilities of offering secular training capacities to imams or chaplains, in addition to their religious training, often received abroad or in private Muslim institutes established more recently on French territory. This article focuses on the five main proposals for university-based training for imams and Muslim chaplains released over the last twenty years. It explains their genesis and restores their contents in a critical perspective, from which emerges a great difficulty in giving birth to a national training program. Nevertheless a progression could be noticed these last years, which carefully composes with traditional Islamic sciences, Muslim theology and Academic Islamic studies, under the attentive look of public authorities.
