Rhetorical devices can be used to meld phenomena as varied as terrorism, the drug traffic and immigration so that they appear to be manifestations of a single and widespread conspiracy. These devices may for example include listing a series of widely divergent occurrences and assembling in a single analysis facts, situations and phenomena that have no other link than their physical and lexical proximity within a text. The author uses several examples to illustrate the way this new analysis of threat is presented, which tends to generalize and exaggerate the danger of the phenomena under study.

AbstractThis article examines views of state educational institutions regarding cultural plurality in Spanish society. This relates to a recent controversial event. The study shows that during the last two or three decades, the Spanish educational system has evolved from a centralized and unilingual system to one that is democratic, gradually decentralized, and integrates values of diversity. For the specific case of Catalonia, school policies relating to cultural diversity face a double challenge : towards the exterior, where the full recognition of the educational legitimacy of both language and culture of this group is at stake : and towards the interior, to guarantee the recognition of the cultural plurality of Catalonia society, and specifically of ethnic minorities.

AbstractTwo sociology departments predominated in assuming the development and spread of Marxism in francophone Quebec : the sociology department of the Université de Montréal during the 1960s, followed by that of the Université du Québec à Montréal, during the 1970s. To retrace the origins of this Marxist sociology, two journals will serve as a lead : Parti pris and Socialisme. We shall first of all examine the development of Parti pris, from 1963 to 1968. It may be considered as the cradle of the young generation of Marxists. We shall then study the evolution of the journal Socialisme, during its ten years of publication. Founded in 1964 by the first generation of Marxist or Marxist-oriented sociologists, it passed four years later into the hands of the young generation who edited it until 1974. It would contribute to the creation of a school of original thought, based on the theory and analysis of the national question and social class.

AbstractFirst on the basis of an historical analysis, we try to discern the different elements which are preparing a new crisis in the capitalist system. With the help of an interpretation which is borrowed from new tendencies in contemporary marxism, the author reviews one by one the evolution of the capitalist world of the socialist world and of the peripheral countries. Attempts at a prediction include different patterns that are possible in the world system in 1984, from the point of view of the economy as well as from the point of view of ideology.
