This article addresses the topic of religious syncretism in the Maghreb and its extremely ancient origins. The text thus attempts to shed light on certain lesser-known aspects of North African reality, where the religious factor is of primary importance. This question is examined both on the level of Islam as an established religion and that of a number of religious beliefs and practices popular in the Maghreb, particularly the "cult of the saints." Upholders of Muslim orthodoxy (often supported by the rationalist analysis of the social sciences) frequently view such worship as nothing more than heretical deviance or survival of the paganism of old. In countering this view, the article shows that Muslim doctrine offers various areas of openness with the potential to foster a process of mutual integration between Islam and ancient North African religions, and thus create a "syncretistic" form of Islam typical to the Maghreb.
