In this article, I go back to the birth of the Histoire de l'édition française (4 vol., 1982–1986) and to the directive given by the publisher, Jean-Pierre Vivet to Henri-Jean Martin, a specialist in the history of the book, who then recruited Roger Chartier to help him respond to this intellectual challenge. Thus contingent on, and stemming from what one would call an in-house editorial “command,” this project would, nevertheless, go on to leave its mark on the entire international scholarly community, leading to multiple “national” texts throughout the world on histories of books, publishing, and reading. That the question of writing a national or a transnational history of the book was posed at the two last congresses of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS), in Sydney (2005) and in Amsterdam (2010), and again at Jinan in August 2015 testifies to the existence of a genuine debate over the fundamental orientation that we as book historians should adopt. By examining the results of these congresses, and by taking note of the SHARP regional and international conferences that have tackled these themes from 2000 to 2010 (notably the conferences in Rio de Janeiro and Monterey), this paper will attempt to show how the international perspective has modified past perspectives and reoriented the discipline towards a more transcultural approach, difficult to implement but promising for the future. In its own way, this change of course or of paradigm is part of a perspective of global history that questions borders and their pertinence in order to understand the phenomena of cultural transfer.

This article examines the impact of proximity factors on intra-African trade intensity. Our contribution consists of the use of a gravity model with the consideration of geographical and economic distances. Our results show that the contrasting levels of trade integration within the RECs are likely to accentuate the asymmetry of continental integration, they reveal that economic distance has a positive and significant impact on the intensity of trade and suggest the strengthening of integration through regional value chains.

In the global context of increasing mobility and migration, unaccompanied minors (UM) generally flee precarious and frequently dangerous situations, including organized violence and war. Their plans to leave represent a response to individual and locally-situated experiences, combined with numerous aspirations (personal, familial, communal, etc.) aimed at improving their living conditions. The traumas and forms of victimization experienced by certain UM in their country of origin and when crossing borders illegally can be exacerbated upon their arrival in their destination country, due to restrictive reception policies. In addition, as a result of family separation, the need to adapt immediately to a host environment and the vulnerability associated with the difficulty and uncertainty of having their status as minors recognized, UM are exposed to various risks. In this context of precariousness, vulnerability and risk of exclusion and victimization, the care and protection of UM must occur swiftly and effectively in order to offer them a stable and secure environment and enable them to integrate into the host society.

Drawing on a corpus of medical and legislative writings, this article traces the development of colonial psychiatry in New Caledonia from 1868 to the end of the indigent regime in 1946. It shows its specificity compared to the universal alienism that developed in mainland France and its variations in other French colonies. It describes how the reconfiguration of the colonial situation influenced psychiatry and facilitated the invisibilization of the mentally ill Kanak. The overlap of sanitary, penal, and settlement logics favored the emergence of an alienism of confinement and isolation, aimed at protecting colonial society from moral contagion, first from convicts, then from immigrant and Indigenous workers. This marginalization effort unfolded in a specific area, Nou Island, where the penal colony and its hospital were located, and relied on a legal regime based on the exceptional procedures permitted by the context of the penal regime, that of the indigent and the leprosy epidemic.

This article aims to contribute to the study of the different accommodation strategies and logics that national and North African tourists use during a stay in Tunisia. It proposes the measurement by nationality of the weight of the different modes of accommodation requested by this tourist population made up of Tunisians, Algerians, Libyans, Moroccans, and the Maghreb diaspora. This measure will serve as an alternative to official statistics which are highly criticized by tourism researchers. The data that informed the research were based on semi-structured interviews and a field survey.
