The effects of climate change are indisputable and now felt in every corner of the globe. For states most vulnerable to climate change, like low-lying island states in the Pacific region, its effects are already affecting their territory, their population, and their capacity to govern. Climate change threatens the traditional concept of statehood, thereby possibly challenging the survival of low-lying island states. This article considers the traditional concept of statehood, examines how the impacts of climate change might affect it, and queries whether the international community has a duty to preserve the current status of low-lying island states. In finding that there is an implied or emerging commitment to protect statehood, this article also considers how low-lying island states, and the international community could proceed to ensure that affected states maintain the characteristics of statehood in international law. I dedicate to Professor Daniel Turp my article in this special issue honoring his prolific career.

This article explores knowledge transmission between two urban planners: René Danger and his son, Paul, both members of the Société des plans régulateurs de villes (Society of Urban Regulatory Plans). Founded by René, the society is known for its vitality in creating plans. René Danger's tendency to theorize his practice can also be seen in his son, Paul. Both were involved in the writing of urban planning textbooks, which will be the focus of this article. The objective will be to show how René and Paul adopted similar approaches. We will identify the principles shared by the two urban planners through the analysis of these texts and their narratives. When put in perspective, but not compared, would they both show similar approaches in the practice of urban planning? If so, what would be the key elements or principles of these approaches which, it should be noted, are still considered relevant?

Like the rest of the province of Quebec, the Bas-Saint-Laurent is affected by the increasing number (gerontogrowth) and proportion (aging at the top) of elderly people. The substantial decrease in the number (juvenile-decline) and proportion (ageing from below) of young people are two phenomena of even greater concern within the region, whose population is declining. The objective of this article is to examine the spatial configuration of territorial disparities with respect to the evolution of the four aforementioned forms of aging in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and its demographic trajectory between 1986 and 2016. Our typological analysis reveals that nearly three-quarters of the communities in the Bas-Saint-Laurent have a worrisome demographic situation, with twelve of them calling for urgent action by the State to promote better occupation of the land.

Today, more North-South Joint-ventures (JVs) are developed mainly to gain greater competitive advantages. Nevertheless, knowledge transfer in North-South JVs did not attract researchers' interest. Even less known is knowledge transfer between the local parent firm to the JV. This the gap we propose to fill. We will try to identify the determinants of a successful knowledge transfer to that end, we examine four case studies. The findings indicate that there are four main determinants of successful knowledge transfer. The parent firm and the JV need to have them in order to succeed in transferring knowledge.

The change in status of its territory with the law of March 19, 1946 does not lead to the end of the business island in Guadeloupe: Until the 1980s, it remained under the influence of the sugar industry imposed as the only one. tool of its economic development. How is this longevity explained? Who are the players and what networks do they rely on? That's the subject of this article.

Research Framework: The Age-Friendly Municipalities approach calls on Quebec municipalities to reflect on facilities and services that would allow their population to age inclusively and actively. The physical and functional attributes of the territory have a significant impact on the positive experience of aging in place. However, changes in the social mix of a neighborhood can add to these dimensions and impact the residential elders' experience. Objectives: This article aims to explore the experience of aging in place in the context of strong demographic changes brought about by past and present immigration. It questions how immigration can change the dynamics of aging in place and lead to forms of innovation to be considered in the management of urban diversity. Methodology: A theoretical framework borrowed from environmental gerontology is used to analyze the interaction between seniors and the transformations of their living environment. A case study is proposed through focus groups conducted in 3 neighborhoods of the Montréal agglomeration marked by aging and immigration (Saint-Léonard, Cartierville, and Parc-Extension). Results: Aging in place in one's community is not a linear and stable experience. Population changes can lead to difficult residential experiences when the physical and functional configuration is not adapted to aging (Saint-Léonard), but also to positive experiences when it is more favourable (Cartierville, Parc-Extension). Structural demographic changes show the elders' resilience in the face of a changing residential environment (Cartierville, Parc-Extension), as do the limits of their adaptation (Parc-Extension, Saint-Léonard). Conclusions: Aging in place in the context of immigration show even more that elderly people are not a homogeneous group. The results call for a more complex examination of the residential environment at the neighborhood level, particularly the notion of aging in place. Contributions: Neighborhoods can transform at a speed and in a dynamic where seniors from here and elsewhere can lose their grip. Theoretical models in environmental gerontology do not account for the dynamic nature of this scale of the home.

The rapid changes that have taken place over the last three decades in Algeria at the economic, social, and political levels resulted in new urban and rural dynamics involving the emergence of a new spatial organisation which caused land use competition to increase in peri-urban areas. Structured by Mostaganem, an intermediate coastal town, and by a group of small agglomerations, the Mostaganem Plateau has a strong agricultural potential. It is currently experiencing, under demographic pressure, a process of peri-urbanisation which is transforming its rural space and generating changes that can be distinctive. This process creating interactions and confrontations between institutional stakeholders, rural and urban residents, landowners, and farmers. This article analyzes this process of reconfiguring the city/countryside relationships in the new urban context of Western Algeria and seeks to understand the actions and strategies of stakeholders through the example of Mostaganem.
