The coming decades will witness a significant increase in the number of displaced persons due to environmental disasters. Slowly evolving environmental changes, notably climate changes, will provoke the shifting of populations.

Building on three Quebec scenes that are seemingly independent from one another, this article intends to think the durée (“duration”) of the onto-political colonial and racial structure constitutive of the imagined and desired national space in formation since the project called New-France. First, thinking with Pierre Coriolan's death and Sindy Ruperthouse's disappearance, the contemporary mechanisms of colonial and racial violence are examined as the reconfiguration of what precedes, that is, slavery and genocidal colonization. Second, the racialized ontological antagonisms and relational positions in the Americas are considered in the specific context of Quebec, to then locate within them the figure of the Arab-Muslim threat that the third scene, the scandal that followed a prayer in a cabane à sucre, unfolds. This figure is itself to be located within orientalism's and Islamophobia's durée, but also to be examined for what it does to the durée, maintaining it future-oriented.

In 2021, the appearance of octopus on Brittany's coasts has prompted numerous reactions and changes to local fishing activities. The impact on fisheries of the proliferation of this a priori competing animal (depredation on scallops, lobster, abalone, et cetera ) must be tempered by the economic windfall experienced by the entire industry, following the creation of international markets. The phenomenon also invites us to consider the environmental memory of the territories worked by fishermen and local industrials. The article analyzes some of the solutions that have been put in place, but above all the reactions of the fishermen of South Finistère, who are as anxious as they are fascinated by this socio-ecological upheaval.

Vulnerability of places to natural hazards is a widely used concept with numerous definitions, yet not directly measurable. To operationalize this “latent variable”, a broad range of studies offers quantitative approaches through indexes. Their often-disclaimed aim is to be used as a planning decision-making tools by stakeholders, increasing areas’ adaptation capacities against natural hazards and climate change. Yet, there is stern contrast between indexes methodology developed in scientific publications and their actual impact in vulnerability reduction policies. This exploratory review uses a mixed approach to offer insights in methodological choices among the wide array of different practices. Based on an analysis grid, publications were tested statistically against a sample considered to be representative. Results were then crossed with qualitative analysis. It appears that i) despite the wording in fair share of abstracts, few publications actually set the creation of operational decision-making tool for stakeholders as their goal ; ii) applied indexes or those creating interest among stakeholders are focused in developed countries’ urban areas ; iii) potential end-users participation during indexes’ construction isn’t a necessary requirement to be seen as relevant by them, but does facilitate it in several ways ; iv) no specific methodological choice has systematic impact on an index’ relevance, which depends from the study’s and application area’s context ; v) mapping visualization is, a priori, the sole necessary requirement, which emphasizes the importance of communication between research team and planners.
