This article focuses on the central role of the consultant, subject and player in their own project. After having described the conditions required for the construction of the youth's personal project (Huteau, Boutinet), they attempt to bring out the social and psychological conditionings that hinder freedom of decision. As regards social aspects, they call on the contributors of French sociology (Bourdieu for the habitus concept, and Duru-Bellat for the analysis of the school's sociology). As for the more psychological conditionings, they resort to concepts of American psychology (Langer for the information processing process in cognitive high tension in the field of social psychology, and Gelatt for positive uncertainty in the field of guidance).

Middlegrounds allow essential interactions between the innovation needs of upperground institutions and the creative productions of underground actors. We explore the hypothesis that these entities are at the heart of a broader institutional creation dynamic. We articulate, on four case studies, the concepts of middleground (Simon, 2009), intermediary institution (Sainsaulieu, 2001), idea of work and person-institution (Hauriou, 1925) and conflict (Simmel, 1908). The case studies reveal sophisticated articulations between middlegrounds, uppergrounds and undergrounds and show that “working n middleground mode” could constitute one of the necessary betweennesses in the current transformations of our societies.

SummaryIn this paper, the authors attempt to identify the manner in which both classical sociologists (Durkheim, Weber and Marx), and recent authors they have influenced, characterize the firm. In so doing, they demonstrate how each sociological tradition stresses a different dimension, be it the institutional and organizational dimensions or social relationships. The authors maintain that while each dimension is certainly legitimate, the links between them have not been explored and they remain isolated from one another. Therefore, drawing simultaneously on models provided by the social movements approach and the theory of regulation, the authors suggest that these different dimensions be transformed into levels of analysis with broader perspectives. Each new level would encompass specific concerns, actors, values and beliefs.
