In 2021, the appearance of octopus on Brittany's coasts has prompted numerous reactions and changes to local fishing activities. The impact on fisheries of the proliferation of this a priori competing animal (depredation on scallops, lobster, abalone, et cetera ) must be tempered by the economic windfall experienced by the entire industry, following the creation of international markets. The phenomenon also invites us to consider the environmental memory of the territories worked by fishermen and local industrials. The article analyzes some of the solutions that have been put in place, but above all the reactions of the fishermen of South Finistère, who are as anxious as they are fascinated by this socio-ecological upheaval.

AbstractThis work aims to explain why the downcutting of the Seine valley is twice as deep as that of the Loire valley in the Paris basin. A geomorphological and sedimentological analysis of fluvial sediment deposited by the Seine and the Loire was carried out as a basis for correlating the different alluvial formations and reconstructing the longitudinal profiles of the terraces. These profiles show the evolution of tectonic deformation since their formation. After the deposition of the Lozère sands, the links between the Loire and the Seine were disrupted and the evolution of the two basins was independent and different on both sides of the tectonic hinge striking southeast to northwest, extending from the Morvan to the Perche hills. So, subsidence of the Sologne continued until the accumulation of the augite-rich alluvial formation was completed around 1.75 Ma. After this, the uplift of the region was responsible for the step-line formation of the more recent terraces. On the contrary, uplift of the Seine basin continued until the phase of incision preceding the deposition of the sediments forming the middle terrace (F3); later subsidence explains the recent inset terraces. The unequal valley downcutting is caused first by tectonic control, then by fluvial dynamics.

This article focuses on the issue of space sharing between different types of inhabitants present simultaneously in cities subject to heritage-making and tourism development. While it is mostly relations between hosts (inhabitants) and guests (tourists) considered as two opposing groups that are discussed, we wish here to apprehend space sharing in a tourist city based on a double capitalistic input. Following a research carried out in the small town of Sarlat (Dordogne, France) and drawing upon semi-structured interviews, two types of capitals appeared crucial for understanding the acceptability of space sharing. The relationships that these inhabitants (temporary or permanent) maintain with others as well as places, if they are intimately linked to their current space-time (within and outside their everyday context), cannot be understood only based on these. The social and cultural capital—in a “Bourdieusian” perspective—and the « indigenousness capital », through the question of attachment to places, allow us to go beyond the binary categorization hosts-guests.

This paper surveys the present state of French law concerning local inquiries on works projects in the energy sector, such as dams, power plants, transmission lines, etc. This is done in the light of the Democratization of Inquiries Bill, which received first reading in the French National Assembly in April, 1983. The subject is treated from three points of view : the scope of application of the inquiry procedure ; the inquiry process itself ; and its effectiveness as a means towards citizens's involvement in public decisionmaking. As regards the scope of the procedure, the Bill would extend it somewhat beyond the cumulative scope of the several existing types of inquiry. Any project affecting the environment would normally be subjected to be the inquiry procedure. As regards the inquiry process itself the Bill would strengthen the independence of inquiry commissioners in that it gives them broader investigative powers, allows them to hold contradictory public hearings upon request albeit with the agreement of the decision-making authority, and requires them to publish reports, with reasons of each inquiry. As regards the effectiveness of the procedure, the Bill would make it easier for dissatisfied parties to obtain a injunction restraining the implementation of a project if the commissioner had reported against it. On the whole, the Bill seems to promise significant improvements in the inquiry process, particularly as it provides for contradictory debate, including the consideration of alternative proposals. However, it leaves open a number of questions about the real purpose served by the procedure and about the proper timing of the inquiry in the total decision-making process.
