AbstractThis essay examines the role of translation in the redefinition of the relationship between authors and their respective national cultures, and in continuing discussions of gender, sexuality, migration and cultural identity in translation studies. The translation of Witold Gombrowicz's novel Ferdydurke from Polish into Spanish by Cuban author Virgilio Piñera and a Translation Committee, not only calls into question the conventional dichotomy of author and translator, but also creates a transnational literary community which questions a number of assumptions about the history of translation in the West, its complicity both in the construction of literary canonicity and the maintenance of the educational institution.

By placing the relationship between action and reality at the center of social theory, the article aims to explore possible new directions for sociological work. The first question of sociology must be for a social world, in which whatever the force of coercion might be, it is always possible to act otherwise. Facing the elasticity of social life, and to confront the vertigo generated by the non-limitation of the action, societies have instituted various impassable limits of reality. Four major areas giving shape to different regimes of reality have historically performed this function (religion, politics, economics, ecology), articulating imaginary assumptions and effective experiences. In contemporary societies, it is Economy, the current hegemonic regime of reality, and partly to Ecology, that operate this function. The recognition of the specifics of this dimension opens new sociological issues.

Dominique Desanti (1920-2011), whose grandfather was a Russian emigrate, was engaged in the French Résistance, then into the Communist Party. She dedicated her life to writing : an historian and a professor, she was also a journalist for « l'Humanité », collaborated with « Le Monde » and « Les Temps Modernes », and a talentuous writer. She shared her life with the philosopher Jean-Toussaint Desanti, whom she met in 1937. She died in Paris on April 8th, 2011. One of her last major book « La sainte et l'incroyante » Bayard 2007, tells the life of an orthodox saint and martyr, Mother Marie Skobtsov, who died in the Ravensbrück camp gaschamber, March 31st, 1945, and was sanctified in the year 2004. Dominique met her into the Paris of the « avant-guerre », she recalls the pathetic episodes of their encounters, and introduces us to the life of that outstanding woman, who crossed apparently all the storms marking her century, from the Russian revolution on. « Mother Marie remained into my bones, and haunted me », she wrote.

This article focuses on The Naïve and the Sentimental Novelist, a written transposition of the lectures of Charles Eliot Norton given by Orhan Pamuk at Harvard University in 2009, and on Other Colours, a collection of essays that examines, in part, the art of fiction and the work of such major novelists as Sterne, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Mann, etc. The aim is to demonstrate how Pamuk's thought on the art of fiction is deeply divided, put in tension by a series of unresolved contradictions. For example, the author, who seeks to present fiction as a self-sufficient genre —i.e., one capable of self-generation and self-conception—, is nonetheless revealed to be passionate about literary theory and eager to expose his ideas in non-fictional genres. This study proposes a reading that shows how the dynamic unique to fiction arises from precisely this instability and irresolution, which comes through in the meandering thinking developed by the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature.
